The Senior Accountant plays a crucial role in the finance department, responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with accounting principles and regulatory requirements. This position requires a strong understanding of accounting practices, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team. The Senior Accountant will contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the accounting operations and provide valuable insights to support decision-making. Candidates must be local to the Chicagoland area.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Reporting & Analysis: Prepare and analyze financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, in accordance with GAAP.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closes.
  • Support the annual audit process by preparing schedules, providing documentation, and responding to auditor inquiries.
  • General Ledger & Reconciliations: Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Perform complex account reconciliations, identifying and resolving discrepancies.
  • Review and approve journal entries, ensuring proper coding and supporting documentation.
  • Accounts Payable / Receivable Support: Oversee and review accounts payable and accounts receivable processes as needed.
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of invoices, payments, and collections.
  • Assist in resolving complex vendor or customer issues.
  • Compliance & Internal Controls: Ensure compliance with internal accounting policies, procedures, and controls.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new accounting policies and procedures.
  • Support internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation and explanations.
  • Stay up-to-date with changes in accounting regulations and best practices.
  • Fixed Assets: Manage the fixed asset ledger, including additions, disposals, and depreciation calculations.
  • Perform periodic fixed asset reconciliations.
  • Payroll: Assist with payroll processing and related reconciliations (e.g., payroll taxes, benefits).
  • Ensure compliance with payroll regulations.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required. CPA or actively pursuing CPA preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience with financial statement preparation and analysis.
  • Proven experience with general ledger maintenance and account reconciliations.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP, Oracle).
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, advanced formulas).
  • Experience with financial reporting tools is a plus.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • High level of integrity and ethical conduct.
