Overview
Security Guard Supervisor/Security Guard 3 at the Special Commitment Center (SCC) within the Behavioral Health and Habilitation Administration (BHHA) in Lakewood, WA – Program Area 4. This role leads security staff, deploys security assets, and ensures a safe and secure institution with readiness for incidents involving riot, rebellion, or assaultive behavior by residents.
We are seeking a customer service–oriented security leader who can adapt quickly, proactively manage safety and security situations, and train others in de‑escalation and non‑physical interventions as needed. This position enforces campus rules, regulations, policies, and statutory law.
Responsibilities
- Lead Security staff on Physical Intervention Team (PIT) movements when residents refuse directives and pose a threat to themselves or others
- Document employee performance issues, submit annual evaluations, and issue performance management reports as directed
- Serve as the Total Confinement Facility shift security lead for a 10‑hour shift; supervise security work activities and assign duties under the on‑site supervisor
- Direct staff to wear appropriate personal protective equipment for the emergency context
- Supervise routine security activities including searches of areas, rooms, and persons; manage resident population control within the facility
- Enforce no trespass standards for McNeil Island
- Conduct investigations related to safety and emergency response
- Generate timely and accurate reports
- Supervise Security Guard 2 staff responding to structural and brush fires, reporting to a Fire Captain
- Maintain physical readiness to perform and train to required standards
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required AND 3 years of experience in one or more of the following roles: security guard, correctional officer, store investigator, police officer or reserve police officer, military police, other law enforcement positions; or 3 years of experience as a Security Guard 1, or 2 years as a Security Guard 2
- One year of experience may be substituted with completion of a basic law enforcement training program approved by the Washington Criminal Justice Training Commission; certification from a police academy, reserve police academy, or military training program may substitute for one of the three years of required experience

- Pierce County employees are eligible for an Orca Card for transportation needs
- SCC employees receive an additional $10 per day premium pay and a free ORCA card for transportation; ferry transportation is provided to McNeil Island
- On-site opportunities at least three days a week may be eligible for an additional 5% premium pay
