This position is assigned to the Mental Health Intensive Case Management (MHICM) division under the Mental Health Service at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center. The MHICM program develops, implements, and assesses a behaviorally oriented program of psychosocial rehabilitation, intensive case management, and community-based treatment for chronically mentally ill veterans, using specialized treatment services provided in various community settings.

Responsibilities

  • Provide intensive case management services to assigned veterans and significant others, in alignment with MHICM goals, VA Mental Health initiatives, and Medical Center policies. Services include assertive outreach, individualized treatment planning, multidimensional care, and intensive service delivery.
  • Participate in team staffing regarding patient selection, treatment plan and goal setting, progress evaluation, discharge planning, and aftercare.
  • Collaborate with inpatient teams to ensure continuity of care by providing consultation on clinical needs, treatment plans, and case management for assigned patients.
  • Promote appropriate treatment, rehabilitation, and expeditious discharge of assigned patients consistent with program goals and individual treatment plans.
  • Complete clinical documentation in accordance with program and Medical Center standards.
  • Work with other clinical programs and maintain effective relationships within the Medical Center and community.
  • May be required to participate in the training of Social Workers, Social Work Associates, volunteers, and students.

Work Schedule

Monday–Friday, 8:00am–4:30pm. Telework: Not Available. This is not a virtual position.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. citizen to apply.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Background/security investigation required.
  • Must complete online onboarding and pre-employment requirements, including acceptable identification documents. Effective May 7, 2025, REAL ID-compliant identification is required for employment.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the influenza vaccination program is required for all VA Health Care Personnel.

Qualifications

Applicants may be referred and tentatively selected prior to completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements, but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed when qualified citizens are not available per VA policy.
  • Education: Master’s degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited school. Doctoral degree may not substitute for the master’s degree.
  • Licensure: Must be licensed or certified to independently practice social work at the master’s level. An exception exists at GS-9; at GS-11 and above, licensure is required.
  • English Language Proficiency: Proficient in spoken and written English.

Additional notes: Licensure may be waived at GS-9 under certain conditions; for GS-11 and above, full licensure is required. See VA Qualification Standards for details.

Grade Determination

GS-11: Requires at least one year of post-MSW experience at the GS-9 level or equivalent, plus licensure/certification. Doctoral degree may substitute for one year of experience. Demonstrated knowledge and abilities include: knowledge of community resources and referrals, psychosocial assessment and interventions, understanding of medical/mental health diagnoses and treatment procedures, independent treatment planning and implementation, and ability to provide consultation to staff and students.
