Job Description

About the Role The GIS Mapping Technician will support the continuation of our Desert Garden Mapping Project while also providing general GIS support across the institution in alignment with our One Huntington strategic plan. Under general supervision, this position will perform a variety of tasks including field data collection throughout the gardens and nurseries, database management, GIS map updates, plant labeling, and quality control reviews. This is a

two-year term position

with the possibility of extension based on organizational needs.

Essential Duties

Perform GIS mapping, location, and assessment of recorded plants and utilities.

Create, collect, update, and maintain GIS databases, including the development of component layers for plant and utility needs.

Collect field data using GNSS receivers and other equipment as required.

Enter data into BG-Base and GIS databases, following established procedures for populating tables and attributes.

Review and interpret data sources; use standard GIS software functions to enter, edit, and update spatial data (points, lines, polygons) and attributes.

Conduct quality-control checks of personal work and data prepared by other staff to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established policies and formatting standards.

Generate plant labels and place labels in the field under the supervision of the Garden Curator or GIS Project Manager.

Collaborate with the Garden Curator to ensure accurate identification and labelling of plant accessions.

Operate GIS-specific hardware including GNSS receivers, mobile devices, laser range finders, and large-format plotters and scanners.

Serve as a GIS technical resource for staff, interns, and volunteers and provide guidance and training as needed.

Support and assist with special projects as assigned.

Candidate Requirements and Experience

Option 1

Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems, GIScience, Geodesign, Environmental Science, Geography, or a closely related field with equivalent coursework in GIS.

Option 2

Completion of a recognized GIS certificate program from an accredited college or university, with prior related internships or work experience in GIS operations, including data entry, editing, and retrieval.

Candidate Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

Proficiency in Esri software, particularly ArcGIS Pro.

Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail and accuracy.

Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Ability to work both outdoors in garden environments and indoors in an office setting.

Proactive engagement with botanical staff, contractors, and other stakeholders.

Strong teamwork skills and ability to collaborate in a supportive, professional manner.

Ability to spatially relate plants, trees, utilities, and hardscape using mapping and interpretive programs such as ArcGIS Field Maps.

Demonstrated curiosity, openness to new ideas, and eagerness to learn and grow in the position.

Valid driver’s license.

Preferred:

General botanical knowledge of succulents and cacti.

Experience with Microsoft 365 applications.

Spanish language skills preferred.
