Summary

The Dental Assistant assists the dentist in many aspects of direct patient care and performs other clinical and clerical functions independently under direct supervision.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  1. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  2. Experience and Education:
    1. Six months experience demonstrating ability to perform the work or familiarity with the work, OR
    2. Successful completion of a 1-year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's CODA, OR
    3. Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying.
  3. Certification: Must meet credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75 for radiologic procedures, including completion of an accredited educational program and certification as radiographers, or meet alternative certification requirements.
  4. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Grade Levels and Experience:

  1. GS-3: Basic requirements only.
  2. GS-4: 1 year of experience at GS-3 level or 2 years of higher education including an accredited dental assistant program.
  3. GS-5: 1 year of experience at GS-4 level or a 4-year course including a CODA-accredited program.
  4. GS-6: 1 year of experience at GS-5 level demonstrating core competencies and KSAs.

Duties

  1. Customer Service: Show courtesy, respect, and a positive attitude; assist with questions and concerns; provide service recovery.
  2. Chairside Assisting: Set up operatory, pass instruments safely and efficiently, keep the operative field clear, prepare medicaments, and assist in routine and specialized procedures.
  3. Dental Imaging: Obtain diagnostic quality images, follow safety protocols, and minimize retakes.
  4. Infection Control and Equipment Sterilization: Follow proper procedures for setup, cleaning, and sterilization of instruments and equipment.
  5. Clerical Functions: Assist with scheduling, charting, and maintaining patient records.
  6. Information Management: Maintain patient confidentiality and follow security regulations.
  7. Patient Safety: Modify care based on patient needs, provide instructions, monitor during treatment, and participate in safety protocols.
  8. Employee Education: Complete required safety training annually.
  9. Dental Laboratory Functions: Pour impressions, prepare models, and perform lab procedures as skill permits.
  10. Direct Patient Care: Remove sutures, take impressions, remove temporary crowns, polish teeth, place rubber dams, and provide post-operative education.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4pm. Telework and relocation incentives are not authorized. This is not a virtual position.
