Overview

The IT Support Technician role involves supporting the day-to-day onsite information technology needs of designated departments within the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute with approximately 500+ computers, servers, and end users. This role serves a diverse user base with varying technical skill levels, including developers, analysts, researchers, and administrative staff. The position supports user devices and applications, including software installation, provisioning or re-provisioning desktops and laptops, troubleshooting issues, and helping users understand technical problems. Work spans technologies used across VTTI’s research and administrative environments, including data acquisition systems, instrumented vehicles, and field-deployed sensors.

Training responsibilities include helping users navigate VTTI systems and services such as software deployment tools, communication platforms, research computing environments, and data analysis workflows to enable more effective and independent work. The role works closely with the IT Service Manager, system administrators, and other IT staff to develop and implement IT policies, respond to incidents involving security, networking, and storage, and improve overall IT service quality. The candidate may need to devise inventive solutions for unique challenges at the edge of technology. A successful candidate will be a creative problem solver with a strong customer experience focus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on support for user devices and applications.
  • Install software and provision or re-provision desktops and laptops.
  • Troubleshoot issues and help users understand complex technical problems.
  • Support technologies across research and administrative environments, including data acquisition systems, instrumented vehicles, and field-deployed sensors.
  • Assist with training on software deployment tools, communication platforms, research computing environments, and data analysis workflows.
  • Collaborate with the IT Service Manager, system administrators, and IT staff to develop IT policies and respond to security, networking, and storage incidents.
  • Identify inventive solutions for unique IT challenges as VTTI’s technology requirements evolve.
  • Maintain a strong customer experience focus and assist users in becoming more self-sufficient.

Required Qualifications

  • Education, experience, and training in a related field or discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of the Windows Operating System, Active Directory, and Microsoft 365.
  • Experience providing end-user support, including one-on-one consultation and training.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and solve complex IT problems with initiative.
  • Experience with computer hardware troubleshooting and repair, and with writing user-facing documentation.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs, including desktops, monitors, or TVs, as part of routine duties.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency with scripts and spreadsheet tools within Windows, Active Directory, and Microsoft 365.
  • Experience with inventory software and hardware/software video conferencing systems.
  • Experience with ticketing/work order systems and remote support tools.
  • Experience with Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MDT, Software Center) and remote support tools; familiarity with Exchange on-premises and Online.
  • Knowledge of networking concepts (TCP/IP, firewalls, VLANs).
  • Working knowledge of iOS, Android, MacOS, and Linux; exposure to configuration management systems.
  • Experience with SQL databases and supporting research computing.
  • Familiarity with programming languages or supporting software developers.
  • Experience with petabyte-scale storage systems.

Pay and Work Details

  • Pay Band: 4
  • Overtime Status: Non-Exempt; eligible for overtime
  • Appointment Type: Restricted
  • Salary Information: Starting rate of $20/hr; commensurate with experience
  • Hours per week: 20-30
  • Review Date: 8/7/2025
