Departmental Overview: The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 275 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs, including about 900 student-athletes. We are seeking an Assistant Director, Athletics Communications. Position Summary
Cal’s Department of Athletics is seeking to fill a crucial Athletic Communications position as the primary contact for rugby and men’s and women’s golf, and other duties as assigned. Essential duties include telling the story of assigned sports across a variety of platforms, including social media, video and web. The role oversees social media strategy and output for assigned sports in conjunction with an overarching media plan. The successful candidate will cultivate positive relationships with local, regional and national media to ensure optimal coverage. The role requires collaborative work across the department, with emphasis on integrating with creative services, marketing, fan experience, digital media and the Cal Athletics Fund. Other duties include arranging and conducting interviews, maintaining statistics, and serving as a team historian for assigned sports. Application Review Date

Under minimal supervision, analyze and report on complex results or activities, write stories, conduct interviews, set up press conferences, and arrange photography, video, or graphics to accompany news releases. Handle breaking news situations, including developing strategies for sensitive or controversial issues. Collaborate with upper management and across units or campus to develop communication plans that serve the department and university. Produce quality work under deadlines and under pressure; take steps to optimize performance when under deadline. Handle news requests from reporters for information about the location; develop positive relationships with external media members. Prepare coaches, student-athletes and staff with appropriate media training and talking points to ensure proper messaging. Maintain confidentiality when necessary; make decisions with the department and university branding in mind. Provide general assistance to facilitate information requests and assist with major institutional news conferences and public announcements. Maintain good communication with campus communicators to coordinate announcements when scope extends beyond the department. Build and maintain relationships at all organizational levels and with external media; proactively reach out to external media to maintain positive interactions. Develop relationships with media members to handle difficult conversations about coverage if necessary. Required Qualifications
Thorough knowledge of concepts and principles of news, media communications and media relations. Strong skills in utilizing news/media mediums including broadcast news, the internet, social media and emerging technologies. Thorough knowledge of or ability to quickly learn the location, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, programs and infrastructure. Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, with an ability to tell a good story and tailor messages for various publics. Good judgment, political acumen, and strong organizational skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Experience with broadcast news, internet and other emerging technologies may be required. Bachelor\'s degree in a related area or equivalent experience. Salary & Benefits

The University provides a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and will not offer a salary outside the posted range. The salary range for this classification is $82,800.00 – $149,800.00. This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position that is eligible for UC Benefits. This is an exempt monthly-paid position.
