For Great South Timber & Lumber LLC, a Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic performs service and repairs on diesel-powered forklifts and other heavy rolling stock equipment. General responsibilities


  • Perform routine maintenance and inspections on heavy equipment, including forklifts, loaders, and other rolling stock. 

  • Conduct diagnostic tests to identify mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical problems. 

  • Repair, rebuild, and replace worn or malfunctioning parts, such as engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical systems.

  • Troubleshoot and repair complex hydraulic and electrical issues.

  • Service engine and fuel systems, including modern computerized and electronic control systems. 

  • Perform emergency repairs in the field to minimize equipment downtime.

  • Keep detailed records of all maintenance and repair work performed.

Required skills and qualifications


  • Experience: Proven experience in diesel engines and hydraulic systems is essential. Experience with heavy rolling stock and forklifts is required. 

  • Education/Training: A high school diploma or GED is the minimum requirement. Technical or vocational training in diesel mechanics or heavy equipment repair is often preferred, but not required. 

  • Mechanical Aptitude: A strong understanding of heavy equipment, engine components, and mechanical systems is necessary. 

  • Diagnostic Skills: Ability to use computerized diagnostic tools to accurately identify complex mechanical problems. 

  • Problem-Solving: The ability to think critically and find effective solutions under pressure.

  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interpret work orders and maintain clear records.

  • Physical Strength and Dexterity: The role requires lifting heavy parts and tools, and working in various positions.

  • Safety Awareness: A commitment to following all safety protocols and regulations, especially in a heavy equipment environment.

  • Tools: Mechanics are often required to own a set of basic hand tools.

Work environment and conditions


  • Mechanics typically work in a repair shop but may be required to perform on-site field repairs.

  • The work can be noisy, and involves handling dirty and greasy equipment.

  • Overtime may be required.
