Overview

A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) provides safe, patient-centered anesthesia care in collaboration with surgical teams for various medical procedures. This role requires advanced clinical skills, flexibility to work variable schedules including nights and weekends, and a strong commitment to patient safety and professionalism. Continuous professional development and adherence to regulatory standards are essential to ensure high-quality anesthetic care within the hospital setting.

Overview (YNHHS CRNA Role)

Provides exceptional patient care in collaboration with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and other physicians to deliver anesthesia for medical and surgical procedures. Cultivates a patient-centric environment addressing the physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and functional needs of the patient, family, and significant others. Serves as the focal professional for continuity of care within scope of practice standards and specialty-specific standards. This is a 24/7 call CRNA role, full-time and distinguished from non-call CRNAs with a regular pattern of scheduling. A call CRNA has a flexible, non-patterned schedule with in-house call responsibilities including off-shifts, weekends, and holidays, and is eligible for the call compensation program.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical Care
    • The CRNA implements accurate, safe, patient-centric anesthetic care.
  • Professional Skill
    • Understands physiologic implications and anesthetic considerations of surgical procedures; constantly monitors vital signs, capnography, and pulse oximetry during anesthesia according to ASA guidelines.
  • Information Management
    • Ensures appropriate documentation within hospital and regulatory requirements and protects information in all forms from unauthorized access, modification, destruction, or disclosure.
  • Quality Management
    • Demonstrates high standards of moral and ethical behavior, professionalism, compassion, and commitment to patient care.
  • Professional Development
    • Continuously engages in projects that maintain and advance professional competency.

Qualifications

Education
Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist; completion of a CRNA training program; graduate of a nurse anesthesia program accredited by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Council on Accreditation. Current State of Connecticut Nursing License; APRN licensure in Connecticut.

Experience
Prefer clinical CRNA experience in the given specialty/service line, but none is required. APRNs, PAs, CRNAs, and CNMs must be appointed to the affiliated medical staff and credentialed through the medical staff process. Evidence of current competence may be obtained during the appointment process via reference letters.

Licensure
AANA Certification; State of CT RN and APRN License; ACLS; CT Controlled Substance Registration; DEA Registration.

Special Skills
Ability to concentrate, stay calm under stress, communicate clearly with surgeons, teams, patients, and families. Must be flexible and adapt to changing environments; capable of immediate anesthetic management.

Physical Demands
Must have adequate vision, hearing, tactile sensation, and motor function; be able to stand for long periods, lift up to 25 pounds, and move with patients as needed in the care environment.
