Overview
This is an Assistant Nurse Manager, Supervisory position located at the Main VAMC hospital - Specialty Medicine Nursing Service - Specialty Care Clinic.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Providing leadership and oversight to nursing and support staff in outpatient specialty clinics, ensuring high-quality, evidence-based care delivery across multiple disciplines.
- Directly supervising various medical personnel, including registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, health technicians, medical instrument technicians, and intermediate care technicians.
- Assisting in the supervision of operations across 10 specialty clinics (e.g., GI, endocrine, neurology, rheumatology, renal, dermatology, cardiology, wound care, infectious disease, and nephrology).
- Coordinating patient care services, including triage, care planning, health promotion, disease prevention, and chronic condition management tailored to outpatient settings.
- Overseeing staff scheduling, orientation, training, competency evaluations, and professional development to maintain clinical excellence and compliance with VA policies.
- Contributing to quality improvement initiatives, tracking outcomes, and implementing evidence-based practices to enhance patient safety and clinic efficiency.
- Fostering interdisciplinary collaboration with physicians, technicians, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes and holistic care.
- Evaluating and updating clinical protocols based on best practices, while providing constructive feedback to staff for performance improvement and growth.
- Managing daily clinic operations, including resource allocation, supply management, and promoting a supportive environment for team members.
- Handling administrative duties such as timekeeping using VATAS, processing leave requests, counseling sessions, addressing grievances and complaints, and assisting with investigations into managerial inquiries.
- Multitasking in high-pressure situations, resolving patient/family concerns promptly, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, including patient confidentiality and risk management.
- Participating in budget planning, cost-effective resource utilization, and program development for outpatient services.
- Educating subordinates on clinical guidelines, VA-specific procedures, and veteran-centered care, while mentoring staff to build skills in handling complex cases.
- Assuming responsibilities of the Nurse Manager as needed, including shift oversight, crisis intervention, and covering when the manager is not in the office.
- Coordinating with other hospital elements and vendors to support clinic operations and patient care.
- Performing additional duties as assigned, such as direct patient care when required, documentation audits, and supporting telehealth or virtual appointment modalities.

Qualifications
Educational Background: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s in Nursing (MSN) or higher preferred from an accredited program.
Clinical Experience: At least 5 years of nursing experience in outpatient or ambulatory settings, with involvement in specialty clinics; experience in GI, endocrine, neurology, rheumatology, renal, dermatology, cardiology, wound care, ostomy, or nephrology is a plus.
Leadership and Management Experience: Minimum of 3 years in supervisory roles (e.g., charge nurse, team lead, or assistant nurse manager), including staff oversight, performance evaluations, team engagement, retention strategies, and process improvements.
Specialized Skills: Proficiency in multitasking during difficult situations, providing constructive feedback, and educating subordinates; strong communication for interdisciplinary teams and patient interactions. Familiarity with VA systems like VATAS for timekeeping, handling grievances/complaints, and conducting investigations; expertise in evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and veteran/patient-driven care.
Certifications and Preferences: Certification in ambulatory care nursing, nurse executive, or equivalent; prior VA experience and mentoring or preceptorship experience are preferred.

Education and Credentials
English Proficiency: Proficiency in English required for direct patient care roles.
Licensure: Current, full, active, unrestricted RN license in the United States (or equivalent). Note on grandfathering provisions for current VA employees in the 0610 series.
