Utilities Construction Worker I/II Job at York County in Yorktown

Responsible for performing heavy, manual work installing and maintaining County sewer collection network. Clears easements by brush cutting, weed trimming, and using chainsaws to cut trees or limbs. Repairs and cleans sewer lines and systems, mixes concrete, and adjusts or repairs manholes. Assists construction crew in all phases of daily operations. Responsible for maintaining and cleaning tools and equipment. Work is performed under direct to minimal supervision, depending on the level of the position.
Utilities Construction Worker I
Requires a high school diploma or GED, and some experience in operating hand and power tools; or any equivalent combination of education and experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Knowledge of utilities/plumbing is preferred but not required.
Utilities Construction Worker II
Must meet and maintain all required knowledge, skills, abilities, and certifications for Utilities Mechanical Operator I. Additional requirements include:
- One (1) year of satisfactory York County experience at the Utilities Construction Worker I level, or two (2) years of direct utilities construction experience.
- Completion or possession of certifications/trainings such as:
- Competent Person Trench Safety
- Confined Space Entry
- Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
- VDOT Flagger
- Mandatory County annual training
Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to typical hazards of outside maintenance and construction work. This is an essential position requiring reporting during inclement weather, outside normal hours, or when county offices are closed. The position is on a rotating on-call schedule.
Depending on the position level, may serve as a lead worker.
Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must be physically capable of operating machinery and equipment such as tractors, front-end loaders, and hand tools. Must be able to lift between 75-100 pounds, and bend and stoop during installation and repair work.
