The Position
Under limited supervision of the Electrical Supervisor, this position performs journey level electrical work in installing, servicing, repairing and maintaining electrical equipment and systems; and performs other related work as required.
Examples of Duties
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed
duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to
address business needs and changing business practices.
• Installs and maintains street lighting standards, conduits, circuits, traffic signals, motors and related electrical equipment and facilities;
• Makes additions, extensions and alterations in the electrical installations for power and lighting;
• Repairs all electrical equipment and facilities and maintains them in operating condition;
• Installs and maintains overhead street name, signs;
• Services, troubleshoots and maintains street lighting, traffic signal systems, water pumping stations, City owned buildings and park electrical equipment;
• Installs overhead banners and marquee messages as needed;
• May be assigned to perform night time streetlight inspections;
• Repairs illuminated pedestrian crosswalks;
• Must observe City safety policies;
• Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of position are performed in a safe efficient manner;
• Performs other related duties as assigned or as situation requires;
Qualifications
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned
within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.
Knowledge of:
• The various types of electrical instruments, equipment and appliances and the standard practices, materials and processes of the electrical trade
• The installation, operation and maintenance of electrical equipment, apparatus and instruments
Skills:
• Possess skills to word process general correspondence, spread sheets and reports using a personal computer and software application;
• In the use of the various types of electrical tools and test equipment;
Ability to:
• Make repairs to electrical machinery and equipment;
• Interpret wiring diagrams;
• Respond to after hours emergency calls as needed;
• Keep accurate work records;
• Develop necessary skills from on-the-job training and meet the standards of performance or higher for the classification by the end of the probationary period;
• Establish and maintain smooth and effective working relationships; and resolve interpersonal conflicts;
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing;
• Deal calmly with rude or angry people;
• Work overtime as requested;
• Work from aerial equipment or climb to work at considerable heights;
• Work in inclement weather and on uneven surfaces;
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of equivalent education, training and
experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to
obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training:
• Graduation from high school or attainment of GED (General Education Degree) or CHSPE
(California High School Proficiency Examination)
• Posses IMSA Level II Traffic Signal Technician Certificate;
Experience:
Four (4) years of experience as a qualified journey level Electrician or completion of a four (4) year
electrical apprenticeship program.
License or Certificate:
• A valid California Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record;
• Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment to position, a valid California Class B Driver's License required as a condition of continued employment.

Must meet approved physical and pre-placement medical standards for the position.
