Position overview: Manage the design, care and presentation of a wide variety of plants and seasonal displays. Provides seasonal floral installation, maintenance and artistic beautification needs within our Downtown Business District areas of Front Street, City parks and Corridor locations. Must have an eye for detail and design artistic arrangements for outdoor display and holiday décor. Works with Grounds maintenance staff, and reports to the Public Works Supervisor.

Essential Job Functions and Expectations:

A genuine love of flowers and a desire to work with them.

Select flowers according to freshness, seasonality and appearance for displays and decoration.

A keen eye for design, color matching and style.

Knowledge of landscape gardening and maintenance practices.

Assess areas under oversight regularly and implement maintenance tasks.

Oversee installation, management and maintenance of plant displays.

Good interpersonal skills, communicate well with the public.

Excellent time management, organization, and prioritization skills.

Written and verbal communication skills are important.

Works outside most of the time in an environment that is rainy, humid, hot, or cold. Noise levels are generally moderate; however, the use of certain equipment may require the use of hearing protection. Environment includes blooming plants, plant saps, fertilizers and other possible allergens, as well as possible exposure to chemicals, herbicides and pesticides. Tasks may require exposure to insects, snakes, and/or rodents according to prevailing habitat conditions.

Maintains planters and plant beds to the highest level of quality by preparing plant beds, installing woody and herbaceous ornamentals, perennials, annuals, and bulbs; watering, weeding, digging, propagating, transplanting and pruning; apply fertilizer and practicing IPM (Integrated Pest Management).

Utilizes the latest techniques in landscaping and gardening; fertilizers and pesticides; plant identification; equipment operation and service; and cultural practices of landscape plant materials.

Working knowledge of annuals, perennials, woody plants, and native plants with a desire to broaden the plant diversity within City business district, City parks, facilities and corridors.

Designs and maintain seasonal holiday theme displays in city park areas during Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter Holidays.

Work with various vendors for the purchases of plants, equipment and other related materials.

Apply industry standard horticultural principles and landscape maintenance techniques to ensure the highest horticulture standards and visitor experience.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma, GED equivalent, or Vocational School Diploma

Minimum of three (3) years Floral Horticultural experience, with team leader or entry level supervisory experience in a job-related field, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Master Gardner license is preferred.
