Scale Operator / Weighmaster Scrap Yard
Position Summary
The Scale Operator / Weighmaster is responsible for accurately weighing incoming and outgoing scrap materials (ferrous & non-ferrous), classifying scrap, issuing scale tickets/receipts, managing customer interactions, and ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards. This role is critical for proper inventory control, customer satisfaction, and financial accountability. Key Duties & Responsibilities
Operate inbound/outbound truck scales and record gross, tare, and net weights. Inspect incoming loads to verify material type (e.g. ferrous vs non-ferrous, appliances, wires) and check for hazardous or prohibited items (e.g. batteries, fluids, propane tanks). Classify scrap per yard guidelines; ensure proper grading. Issue scale tickets or receipts and handle payments (cash / check / etc.). Maintain accurate transaction records (weights, customer, material type, date/time). Direct truck traffic in the yard and coordinate with loaders / sorters / yard staff. Monitor scale accuracy; report malfunctions; assist with calibration. Keep the scale house/yard clean, safe, and compliant with PPE and safety protocols. Use software/computer systems for data input, daily totals, and reporting. Be the customer/driver point of contact: answer questions, explain pricing, resolve discrepancies. Qualifications
High school diploma or GED. Experience with truck scales, scrap, recycling, or similar industrial yard work preferred. Solid math skills (calculating weights, grade adjustments). Basic computer skills (data entry, software). Good communication/customer service and attention to detail. Reliable, honest, able to multitask and work under pressure.
