Crane Operator Scrap Yard
The Crane Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating material-handling cranes to move, load, and sort ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal throughout the yard. This role directly supports production, shipping/receiving, and processing goals while maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work environment. Key Responsibilities
Operate hydraulic material handlers (magnet or grapple) to move, stack, and load/unload scrap metal Load shredders, shear lines, balers, and downstream conveyors with appropriate material flow Sort and separate scrap to prevent contamination between ferrous and non-ferrous streams Load outgoing trailers, railcars, or barges to weight and quality specifications Perform daily pre-shift inspections and minor maintenance on assigned crane Coordinate movements with scale house, torch crews, and ground spotters to maintain traffic flow and safety Maintain constant awareness of surroundings to prevent equipment or property damage Record loads and production counts as required by supervisors Assist with yard clean-up and equipment relocation as needed Qualifications
Prior experience operating material handlers or cranes in a scrap, recycling, or heavy industrial environment Valid crane or material-handler certification/license (as required) Strong knowledge of rigging, lifting, and safety procedures Ability to work in all weather conditions and lift up to 50 lbs Excellent hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and communication skills Commitment to safety, punctuality, and teamwork Work Environment
Outdoor scrap yard environment Exposure to noise, dust, sharp metal, and heavy machinery traffic Requires wearing PPE (hard hat, steel-toe boots, high-visibility vest, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection)
