Sanitation Technician

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute . The Sanitation Technician is responsible for the sanitation and sterilization of animal caging systems to maintain a high-level rodent colony health program. This position is located in Boston and surrounding communities. Responsibilities: Operate mechanical cage wash equipment, including automation, tunnel, rack, high pressure autoclaves, dry heat sterilizers, and automatic bedding dispensing units such as SureFlo and SureVac. Remove, receive, and dump/scrape soiled rodent cages and water bottles in preparation for washing; handle and store clean materials processed through cage wash equipment. Fill sanitized water bottles with RO water from RO filling stations as needed. Prepare clean cage setups for animal care staff and maintain SureVac system as required. Maintain chemical mixing stations; prepare chemicals and provide clean forceps and containers to animal care staff. Handle, dumps, removes, and packages chemical or biohazard treated bedding and debris at ABSL1/2 levels and chemical hazard levels; remove carcasses and packaging weekly. Maintain clean and orderly cage wash areas (clean and dirty sides) and perform routine sanitation of walls, ceilings, floors, cage wash equipment, and storage racks in cage wash and sterile holding areas; manage recycling, soiled material, and trash daily. Monitor environmental changes in cage wash areas and report deviations to supervisors; report equipment problems promptly to senior staff. Complete daily floor decontamination using a floor scrubber as needed. Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred. Minimum Experience: None required; 1 year in an accredited/non-accredited laboratory animal facility and/or veterinarian technician program preferred. English reading, writing, and computer skills required. License/Certification/Registration: AALAS technician certification at the ALAT level is preferred but not required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to work independently and as part of a team; adhere to SOPs; strong English communication skills; ability to work in an organized manner with attention to detail; ability to learn new tasks and communicate with management. In designated roles involving laboratory settings or animal research, employees may be required to confirm that they do not have pet rodents at home or to rehome them before employment.
