School Bus Driver Responsible To:

Director of Transportation and Transportation Supervisor Job Qualifications: Valid commercial driver's license issued by the State of Alabama to operate a motor vehicle. Valid bus driver's certificate issued by the State of Alabama to operate a bus. Must be 21 years of age or older. High school graduate or equivalent (GED) and academic competency in basic skills. Physical every two years (or sooner as prescribed by Doctor) and such health and age requirements as the Board of Education may require. Job Goal:

To provide for the safe transportation of students. Performance Responsibilities: Transports students to and from schools or school activities following a preplanned route and time schedule; transports only authorized students and discharges students only at authorized stops. Inspects bus before each operation to detect any mechanical condition or malfunction affecting safety or economy of operation and reports any findings to authorized service personnel; notifies proper authorities in case of mechanical failure. Drives with care at all times; observes all traffic laws as well as state and local transportation rules. Prescribes, in cooperation with school personnel, the seating arrangements of students on assigned buses. Instructs transported students in safe riding practices. Ensures transported students observe all rules prescribed by laws and by the state and local boards. Maintains order and discipline, under the direction of the school personnel, on the part of every transported student. Reports to the school personnel repeated/serious misconduct on the part of any student while on the bus or under the driver's immediate supervision. Participates in emergency evacuation drills at least twice each school semester. Attends and participates in conferences, meetings, and training classes for school bus driver. Maintains preparedness to successfully pass, at any time, a reasonable examination concerning traffic laws, state and local transportation rules, and driving skills. Prepares reports, keeps all records required, and otherwise assists transportation and school officials in planning bus routes and schedules and obtaining necessary information for a continuous study of all phases of the district's transportation service. Also, prepares immediately after every accident or incident involving the bus or a school bus passenger a report to be filed with the appropriate transportation or school official. Keeps the bus clean and neat at all times. Maintains, as far as practicable by patient and considerate treatment of parents, a feeling of security in the safety of transported students. Maintains effective public relations with the total school community especially with the public en route. Performs other related duties as required Keep bus properly fueled at all times. Maintain confidentiality of any school system business. Maintain proper and professional relationships with students and other employees. Assume other transportation related duties as assigned by supervisor. Physical Ability and Requirements: Tasks may involve the regular and, at times, physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Tasks may also involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (25 pounds or more). Must be able to demonstrate the ability to move a 25 pound object from the front of the bus to the rear of the bus, open emergency door, and take the object to a safe distance in a timely manner. Ability to properly use equipment and various operational controls while operating a school bus. Terms of Employment:
