Position Overview The City of South Pasadena is looking for an experienced and highly-motivated Senior Accountant! DEFINITION Under general direction of the Accounting Manager-Controller, the Senior Accountant performs a variety of responsible professional accounting work for the City including the maintenance, compilation, and review of various financial records. Assists in developing and installing accounting systems; and prepares accounting and auditing reports.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the advanced journey-level class in the professional accounting series and is distinguished from lower-level professional accounting classes by the level of independence in performing duties and functions of the position, and by the performance of the more difficult and complex assignments. Duties & Responsibilities EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Perform complex professional accounting and budgetary work involved in establishing, analyzing, auditing, reconciling and maintaining financial records in support of designated programs or an assigned division or department; ensure financial activity of assigned accounts complies with applicable laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Provide administrative support in the planning, development, review, analysis and implementation of designated budgets and accounts; monitor, evaluate and reconcile accounts related to assigned funds and budgets; prepare income and expenditure projections to assist with budget preparation as directed; analyze program and project costs and provide recommendations concerning budgetary allocations as assigned.

Prepare and process a variety of accounting documents such as debt allocations, fixed assets, monthly fund balance, and cash balance.
Perform duties in the maintenance and analysis of General Ledger Accounts and other subsystems such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, inventory and fixed assets.
Calculate, post, audit and adjust journal entries; update accounts to reflect revenue and expenditure; audit accounts for errors and make appropriate adjustments; reconcile various fiscal statements to ensure accurate fund accounting; ensure financial statements and cash amounts match organizational records as assigned; initiate account transfers and other transactions as needed.

Perform a variety of special accounting projects in support of assigned division, department or programs; research, compile, assemble and analyze a variety of financial, statistical and budgetary information; participate in the investigation and resolution of financial issues, errors and discrepancies.
Prepare, review and evaluate various financial documents and correspondence as assigned; assist in ensuring mandated reports are completed and submitted to appropriate agency or personnel according to established timelines; assemble materials and provide assistance to outside auditors and in conducting annual audits and reviews of the City's accounting and financial systems.
Communicate with personnel, governmental agencies and outside organizations to exchange information, coordinate activities and resolve issues or concerns.

Maintain current knowledge of laws, codes, rules, regulations and pending legislature related to assigned accounting functions.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration, or closely related field.
Five (5) years of increasingly responsible professional level accounting experience, including one (1) year of supervisory experience. Governmental accounting experience is -preferred.
Note: An equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training may substitute for the listed minimum requirements. Possession of an active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) certificate, and/or Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) is highly desirable.

1% base salary contribution to deferred compensation.
A flexible 4/10 work schedule with remote/hybrid work schedule is available for select positions. The City also closes from December 25 to January 1, and employees are paid during this time.
Vacation accrues based on years of service, starting at 88 hours the first year, 96 hours, and increasing by 8 hours annually*. Employees may cash out vacation once per year, up to 80 hours.*

CALPERS
Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS or an agency with CALPERS' reciprocity or who have more than a six-month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive the 2% at 62 formula.
Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity, or who have less than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency and employment with the City will be enrolled in the 2% @ 55 benefit formula.
All employees are required to pay the full employee contribution to CalPERS.
