Backflip
About Backflip Backflip (backflip.ai) is a generative AI startup revolutionizing how engineers and designers create for the physical world. Founded by the team behind Markforged, we’re building AI-first tools that make 3D design as intuitive and fast as sketching on paper. Backed by a16z and NEA, we’ve raised a $30M Series A and built a deeply technical, mission-driven team of 15. Our goal is to empower one engineer to work at the speed of a hundred.
The Role We are looking for a
Lead
Technical Product Manager
to drive the vision, roadmap, and execution for Backflip’s core AI-powered design platform. This role combines deep technical understanding with strong program management, partnering closely with engineering, AI research, and design to deliver features that redefine how users create. You will own the product from 0→1 through scale, balancing strategic roadmap thinking with day-to-day execution. That means everything from defining success metrics and writing crisp specs to unblocking cross-functional teams and ensuring on-time, high-quality delivery. You will be a central node in the organization, translating between technical and business priorities to ship high-impact work. We Expect You To
5+ years of combined experience in product management and technical program management, ideally in AI, 3D, or complex technical products
Bring a background as a technical contributor (e.g., software engineer, ML engineer, data scientist) with the ability to dive deep into engineering discussions
Lead cross-functional planning and execution from defining the roadmap to delivering production-ready features
Drive decision-making through data and user insights with a track record of running experiments and iterating quickly
Excel in startup environments, comfortable with ambiguity, fast pivots, and wearing multiple hats to get the job done
Nice to Have
Experience in generative AI, 3D graphics/CAD, or creative tooling
Strong grasp of ML workflows from research through deployment
Familiarity with experimentation frameworks, product-led growth, or developer tools
Experience managing integrations, APIs, or multi-modal interfaces
A knack for turning abstract concepts into clear, actionable product plans
Representative Projects
Leading the launch of a new AI-assisted design workflow from concept to production release
Defining data and evaluation pipelines to measure the impact of new generative AI features
Coordinating cross-functional sprints to integrate a major ML model upgrade into the product
Designing and running user experiments to validate usability improvements before scaling to all customers
Building the technical roadmap for a platform capability that unlocks multiple future product features
Why Backflip Repeat founders in 3D printing/CAD with a prior $2.1B exit
