System Administrator I

- Bachelors degree with a major in computer science or related field from an accredited institution with one year relevant experience. A combination of education, experience, certifications, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.

System Administrator II

Bachelors degree with a major in computer science or related field from an accredited institution with two years relevant experience. Masters degree preferred. A currently valid Microsoft Technology Associate certificate or higher, or a Red Hat Certified System Administrator certificate or higher could be substituted for one year of experience. A combination of education, experience, certifications, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered. Nature & Purpose of Position:

System Administrator I

- Assists with the upkeep, configuration, and reliable operation of Sam Houston State University Information Technology systems. Acquires, installs, and upgrades routine computer components and software.

System Administrator II

- Maintains the upkeep, configuration, and reliable operation of Sam Houston State University Information Technology systems. Acquires, installs, and upgrades advanced computer components and software. Primary Responsibilities:

System Administrator I

- Acquires, installs and upgrades computer components and software. Provides routine automation, and maintains security policies in conjunction with security office recommendations and state and federal regulations. Maintains core services to include e-mail, voicemail, printing, file sharing, authentication and access control, databases, video surveillance, disaster recovery, and storage systems. Processes service requests and tasks using the Information Technology ticketing system. Communicates effectively and timely with team members and clients. Serves as a member of project teams to build small (1 or 2 server) systems. Maintains small systems. Performs other related duties as assigned.

System Administrator II

- Acquires, installs and upgrades computer components and software. Provides advanced automation, and maintains security policies in conjunction with security office recommendations and state and federal regulations. Maintains core services to include e-mail, voicemail, printing, file sharing, authentication and access control, databases, video surveillance, disaster recovery, and storage systems. Communicates effectively and timely with team members and clients. Serves as a member of project teams to build small (1 or 2 servers) to medium (up to 5 servers) systems. Maintains small to medium systems. Manages authentication and access control systems. Configures automation routines using scripting and other programming languages. Performs other related duties as assigned. Other Specifications:

System Administrator I

Must be available for after-hours on-call support.

Ability to follow change management and incident response procedures. Basic understanding of application and operating system deployment, configuration, troubleshooting, and patching in Windows and Linux environments. Familiarity with access management and the use of authentication systems such as LDAP/Active Directory, Entra ID, RADIUS, and Single Sign On technologies such as SAML, CAS, OpenID. Familiarity with basic scripting (e.g., Bash, PowerShell) and system monitoring tools. Basic understanding of core networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, SMTP, VLANs) and file sharing standards (NFS and CIFS/SMB). Basic knowledge of virtual machines (VMs) and physical servers including provisioning and troubleshooting within the on-prem environments (e.g., VMware).

This is a security-sensitive position and requires a Department of Public Safety (DPS) fingerprint background check and adherence to the Texas Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) Systems Access Policy. Some travel is required.

System Administrator II

Must be available for after-hours on-call support.

Ability to follow change management and incident response procedures. Experience in application lifecycle management including installation, configuration, upgrades, and performance tuning. Advanced knowledge of operating system deployment, configuration, and patching in Windows and Linux environments. Proficient in troubleshooting application and OS-related issues across platforms. Familiarity with clustering, load balancing, and high availability configurations for application services such as web and database platforms. In-depth understanding of networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, SMTP, VLANs) and storage and file sharing standards (SAN, NAS, NFS and CIFS/SMB). Basic knowledge with access management and the use of authentication systems such as LDAP/Active Directory, Entra ID, RADIUS, and Single Sign On technologies such as SAML, CAS, OpenID and security technologies (SSL/TLS). Basic experience managing virtual machines (VMs) and physical servers including provisioning, monitoring, and troubleshooting within on-prem environments (e.g., VMware). Experience with scripting languages and automation tools (e.g., SQL, Bash, PowerShell, Ansible). Familiarity with performance monitoring and logging tools.
