JOB SUMMARY: The Area Extension Director provides leadership for Kentucky State University Cooperative Extension county-based staff in a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, issue-based Extension program in the assigned area. The Extension Area Director applies a broad understanding of priority issues impacting individuals, families, and communities to recruit, train, and evaluate county Extension agents and paraprofessionals in collaboration with the Regional Director. The Extension Area Director serves as a contact person working with the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension, Regional and Area Extension Directors, District Extension Boards, and County Extension Councils. The Extension Area Director reports to the Regional Extension Director.
This position supervises and monitors the progress and performance of county-based Extension agents in the assigned area. It coordinates the design, implementation, and evaluation of county and multi-county Extension programs in cooperation with Program Leaders and other appropriate personnel at the land-grant universities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Manage and mentor county-based Extension agents in program development, implementation, and evaluation; conduct county analysis reporting Approve county-based Extension agents’ Plans of Work and conduct performance evaluations Identify and address county-based Extension agent needs related to staff relations, morale, budget, and professional development in collaboration with Kentucky State University Extension, University of Kentucky Extension, Advisory Councils, District Boards, and County Councils Routinely meet with county-based Extension agents and conduct a minimum of six county site visits annually, along with virtual meetings Attend and provide updates at Extension leadership team meetings, quarterly Extension meetings, and administrative and district meetings Attend and participate in various state and county stakeholder groups including, but not limited to, the Cattlemen’s Association, KY Horticulture Council, KY Sheep Council, KY Farm Bureau, KY Maple Producers, and County Agricultural Investment Program Attend and participate in the Middle Managers Southern Regional Meeting Provide monthly updates to the Regional Director Ensure that county-based Extension agents disseminate Extension programs, journal articles, and fact sheets to stakeholders Serve on university committees, stakeholder groups, and professional associations as appropriate Ensure county-based Extension agents deliver training and relevant educational materials to stakeholders in a timely manner Provide instruction to county-based Extension agents on the use of the Kentucky Extension Reporting System (KERS)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Evidence of administrative leadership and strong managerial skills Ability to work effectively as part of a team Excellent oral and written communication skills Knowledge of Extension program development, evaluation, and reporting processes Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with a wide range of individuals and organizations Ability to implement the Kentucky State Cooperative Extension Strategic Plan Initiative, resourcefulness, and the ability to work independently Valid driver’s license
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: This position does have supervisory responsibility.
OTHER DUTIES: Other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in education, agriculture, family and consumer sciences, public administration, or a related field preferred Bachelor’s degree in a related field with 5–7 years of experience in Extension work required Demonstrated experience in designing, implementing, evaluating, and reporting the impact of community-based, non-formal educational programs Experience supervising professional and support staff Experience working with individuals across a range of community and economic backgrounds
WORKING CONDITIONS: In-state and out-of-state travel. Be able to work some overtime. Work could involve some exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises Requires some standing or walking. Must be able to lift 10 lbs. Required to travel to area region.
