About GLAD GLAD is nationally recognized for unmatched litigation and legal expertise in advancing LGBTQ+ rights. Through impact litigation, public policy advocacy, and education, GLAD works regionally and nationally to create a just society free of discrimination on the basis of gender identity, HIV status, and sexual orientation. GLAD’s Justice for All Strategic Plan (2022) guides this work. GLAD has led historic victories and coalition-building efforts, including landmark milestones in HIV protections, transgender rights, and marriage equality. Our approach combines litigation, policy advocacy, and public education to secure rights for all LGBTQ+ Americans and to influence public opinion. Why Now? Nearly fifty years after our founding, LGBTQ+ communities face increasing hostility. As a nonprofit law firm with national reach, GLAD’s advocacy, legislative work, and policy influence are needed more than ever. We seek an Executive Director who can lead a multi-generational team of LGBTQ+ leaders, staff, and legal experts. GLAD remains focused on expanding national leadership, growing legal capacity, protecting a multiracial, pluralistic democracy, investing in organizational infrastructure, and sustaining an antiracist and intergenerational movement. The Executive Director Opportunity Following a nine-year tenure by the previous Executive Director, GLAD is seeking a new leader during a pivotal moment in history. The organization has stable finances, dedicated staff, strong fundraising momentum, and plans for growth. An Interim Executive Director, Richard Burns, is supporting a smooth transition. Standing at the frontline of LGBTQ+ rights, GLAD seeks a trailblazing ED to lead a $5M+ organization, grow capacity, fundraising, impact, and national presence. The ED will oversee a team of 35+ staff and interns, including a legal team of prominent LGBTQ+ and human rights litigators. The ED will serve as GLAD’s chief ambassador, fundraiser, and spokesperson, working with movement partners, funders, and other stakeholders to amplify GLAD’s voice and advance rights for the community. The ED will foster an inclusive culture and deepen coalitions while pursuing strategic priorities such as: Expanding and deepening GLAD’s national impact and presence. Growing our legal capacity. Ensuring an equitable and inclusive workplace. Further building a hybrid workspace for flexible online collaboration. Key responsibilities

include, but are not limited to the following: Strategy & Leadership

Engage staff, the Board of Directors, and other stakeholders to advance GLAD’s vision and direction. Create short- and long-term plans implementing GLAD’s strategic priorities with accountability and milestones. Pursue, steward, and secure strategic relationships to strengthen GLAD’s reputation, visibility, and impact. Advance diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and antiracism across the organization. Serve as an external leader in the national movement to pursue collective impact. Funding & Resource Development

Lead major gifts fundraising and partnerships to meet ambitious goals. Secure new funding and diversify revenue streams. Maintain and develop relationships with key funders and donors. Organizational and Team Management

Strengthen an equitable culture for 35+ employees and interns and 15-20 board members. Direct four senior leaders (Development, Finance & Operations, Legal, Public Affairs & Education). Facilitate staff development, recruitment, retention, performance management, and career pathways. Improve organizational infrastructure, processes, tools, and protocols. Community Engagement & Strategic Alliances

Identify strategic alliances and coalitions to amplify impact. Tell GLAD’s story to engage the public and stakeholders. Deepen relationships with community leaders, agencies, partners, and elected officials. External Relations & Presence

Act as GLAD’s spokesperson to increase visibility, funding, and national presence. Oversee communications, branding, and donor communications. Represent GLAD in public forums and media opportunities. Financial & Operational Management

Ensure fiscal stewardship with the CFO and Finance Committee. Prepare annual budgets and manage risk to sustain the organization. Work with infrastructure leaders to improve efficiency and scale. Candidate Profile GLAD values justice, inclusion, anti-racism, and collaboration. An ideal candidate may not need to be a lawyer, but must demonstrate commitment to LGBTQ+ advocacy and civil rights, with strong leadership, strategy, and vision. We encourage candidates from all backgrounds, especially transgender, disabled, and BIPOC individuals. Core competencies include alignment with GLAD’s mission, fundraising ability, strategic planning, external relationship-building, and leadership development. Location, Compensation, and Benefits Office in Downtown Boston with a hybrid schedule. Boston or Northeast-based candidates are preferred but not required. Regular presence in Boston with some travel is required. Salary range: $215K-$250K, plus comprehensive benefits (three weeks paid vacation, health/dental insurance, 401(k) with employer contribution, disability insurance).
