The associate General Counsel provide legal advice to the Tribal Council and the Tribe’s Departments in all relevant matters as directed by the Tribe’s General Counsel or the Tribal Council. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : The Associate General Counsel provides legal advice to theTribal Council and the Tribe’s Departments in all relevant matters as directed by the Tribe’s General Counsel or the Tribal Council and may be required to represent the Tribe before Tribal, Federal, and State courts, departments, committees, and agencies. Except upon special request of the Tribal Council, the Associate General Counsel will not be required to render any legal services for, represent, or appear on behalf of any employee or Member of the Tribe in the employee’s or member’s individual capacity nor may the Associate General Counsel act in the capacity of the Tribal Court prosecutor or defender. The Associate General Counsel must devote professional time to the performance of their duties, as is reasonable, necessary, and appropriate. The employee contract will set forth additional obligations and benefits as negotiated. The Associate General Counsel will be expected to perform services for the Tribe at least 40 hours per week with some opportunities for remote work and to travel as reasonably necessary. The Associate General Counsel will be required to maintain their licenses in good standing and will receive compensation for continuing legal education trainings. GENERAL STANDARDS FOR ALL EMPLOYEES: Participate in improving organizational performance activities as assigned Report to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within designated times, takes precautionary measures to prevent lateness and absences. Exhibit careful, conservative use of property, supplies and equipment. Provide clear and concise communications. Handle pressure well; is able to accomplish a task in spite of difficulty. Assume additional responsibilities to contribute to the team effort. Exhibit a high degree of concern for others. Exercise strict ethical behavior and professional confidentiality. Demonstrate an awareness of safety procedures and follow through. Attend mandatory in services, orientations, re-certifications, etc. GENERAL EXPECTATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High School or GED AJuris Doctordegree from an accredited law school AND at least two (2) years’ experience working in a field of Indian Law. Licensed to practice law in any in good standing and must be able to acquire appropriate licensing in either Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, in order to enable the Counsel to represent the Tribe in Tribal, State, and Federal jurisdiction. Must divulge all disciplinary proceedings which are currently pending. Must be able to travel within the United States upon reasonable accommodation. Valid driver license and be insurable by Tribe. CPR and First Aide certification or be willing to obtain. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS Adequate knowledge and expertise in the practice of Indian Law to effectively perform the duties described Proficiency in or knowledge of using a variety of computer software applications, especially Excel and Microsoft Suite High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation Knowledge of office administration procedures and ability to operate most standard office equipment Attention to detail in composing, typing, and proofing materials, establishing priorities, and meeting deadlines Good to excellent spelling, grammar, and written communication skills Excellent telephone and oral communication skills Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality Please note the location is not representative of the city, but the region.
