Remote Sign Language Interpreter

to support students, professionals, or clients in Michigan through real-time virtual interpretation services. Job Summary: The Remote Sign Language Interpreter will facilitate effective communication between Deaf or hard of hearing individuals and hearing individuals in a variety of remote settings, including but not limited to educational, professional, and community environments. The ideal candidate will have strong interpreting skills, professional ethics, and the ability to work independently in a remote environment. Key Responsibilities: Provide real-time American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation services via video conferencing platforms (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams). Accurately interpret spoken English into ASL and vice versa in a variety of settings, including classrooms, meetings, events, and virtual appointments. Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional standards and the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct. Prepare for interpreting assignments by reviewing relevant materials or consulting with clients or team members as needed. Collaborate with educators, administrators, or other stakeholders to ensure access and clarity in communication. Adapt interpreting techniques and approaches based on consumer preferences and communication styles. Provide cultural mediation when appropriate to enhance mutual understanding between Deaf and hearing participants. Document service hours, assignment notes, and any required administrative information in accordance with organizational or client policies. Qualifications: Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and English. Certification through RID (e.g., NIC, CI/CT) or BEI, or demonstrated equivalent experience. Compliance with Michigan state requirements for sign language interpreters (or willingness to obtain state credentials). Minimum of 2 years of interpreting experience preferred, especially in educational or remote settings. Familiarity with video remote interpreting (VRI) platforms and technology (e.g., Zoom, WebEx, VRI software). Strong understanding of Deaf culture, accessibility standards, and ADA compliance. Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills. Reliable internet connection and access to a private, quiet workspace. Preferred Qualifications: Experience interpreting in K12 or higher education settings. Knowledge of specialized vocabulary for educational, medical, or legal settings. Experience with captioning services or CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) coordination. Michigan BEI (Board for Evaluation of Interpreters) certification.
