POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Junior Packaging Engineer plays a key role in supporting the design, development, and implementation of packaging solutions that meet product protection, cost efficiency, and sustainability goals. This entry-level position is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career professional with a passion for packaging innovation and a desire to grow within a collaborative, fast-paced environment. The Junior Packaging Engineer works closely with cross-functional teams including product development, supply chain, and operations to ensure packaging solutions align with business objectives and customer expectations.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist in Packaging Design: Support the creation of packaging concepts for new and existing products using CAD and prototyping tools. Participate in brainstorming sessions and design reviews to contribute creative and functional ideas. Support Material Selection: Research and recommend materials based on performance, cost, and environmental impact. Assist in maintaining a database of packaging materials and specifications. Conduct Packaging Testing: Execute standard packaging tests (i.e. drop, vibration, compression) to validate performance. Document test results and assist in analyzing data to recommend improvements. Contribute to Sustainability Initiatives: Identify opportunities to reduce packaging waste and improve recyclability. Support reporting on sustainability metrics and compliance with environmental standards. Participate in Cost Optimization: Assist in evaluating packaging designs for cost-saving opportunities. Collaborate with suppliers to identify alternative materials or processes. Collaborate with Suppliers: Communicate packaging requirements to external vendors and assist in sourcing. Participate in supplier evaluations and support quality assurance efforts. Cross-Functional Project Support: Work with marketing, operations, and product teams to ensure packaging meets branding and operational needs. Provide technical input during product launches and packaging trials. Ensure Regulatory Compliance: Support compliance with packaging regulations and industry standards (i.e. ISTA, ASTM). Assist in maintaining documentation for audits and certifications. Maintain Documentation: Prepare and update packaging specifications, test reports, and change records. Organize packaging assets and maintain version control. Drive Continuous Improvement: Participate in process improvement initiatives and lean manufacturing projects. Suggest enhancements to packaging workflows and tools.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Packaging Science, or a related field. 0-2 years of relevant experience in packaging (internships or co-ops included). Basic knowledge of packaging materials such as corrugate, plastics, and paperboard. Familiarity with CAD software (i.e. ArtiosCAD, SolidWorks) and prototyping tools. Understanding of packaging testing protocols and standards (i.e. ISTA, ASTM). Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment. Detail-oriented with strong organizational and documentation skills. Eagerness to learn and grow within the packaging engineering field.
