State Bar of California — Accountant/Senior Accountant

Position: Accountant/Senior Accountant (CTAPP) in the Regulation Division — Client Trust Account Protection Program (CTAPP).

About the Position

The CTAPP Accountant/Senior Accountant plays an important role in a regulatory program designed to protect client funds held in trust by California attorneys. Responsibilities include conducting compliance reviews and investigative audits of attorney trust accounts to ensure compliance with applicable laws, preparing reports, and communicating with licensees to educate and recommend corrective actions. The Senior Accountant may lead or contribute on engagement teams and collaborates with external accountants, applying accounting and auditing standards and investigative methodologies.

Responsibilities (Examples)

  • Perform compliance reviews and targeted investigative audits of attorney client trust accounting records.
  • Analyze investigative records and prepare findings reports.
  • Communicate findings clearly, both verbally and in writing; educate licensees when possible.
  • Recommend corrective actions for identified issues and coordinate with external accountants and State Bar staff.
  • Oversee or contribute to the complete compliance review process and work with professional and support staff.
  • Suggest policy and procedure improvements based on reviews and audits.

Qualifications

Accountant

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in finance, business, or accounting is required; a master's degree is preferable.
  • Experience: Minimum two (2) years of experience conducting financial or compliance audits.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Active CPA license issued by the California Board of Accountancy or equivalent; CPA certification must be maintained. Additional designations such as CFE, CFF, or CIA are preferred.

Senior Accountant

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in finance, business, or accounting is required; a master's degree is preferable.
  • Experience: Minimum four (4) years of experience conducting financial or compliance audits.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Active CPA license; additional designations (CFE, CFF, CIA) preferred.

Additional Details

  • FLSA: Exempt; Union represented.
  • Remote work: Up to four days per week remote.
  • Salary ranges: Base pay range $92,960.00/yr - $136,352.00/yr; CTAPP Accountant: $92,960 - $123,943; CTAPP Senior Accountant: $102,263 - $136,352. These ranges reflect program context and experience and are subject to recruiter discussion.
  • Location: California (state regulatory program).
