As an Injection Tooling Engineer, you will play a key role in supporting the development and production of large plastic components by leading tooling strategy, design input, and execution. Your primary focus will be on ensuring that injection mold tools are optimized for manufacturability, performance, and cost-effectiveness, while meeting demanding production requirements. You will collaborate with design, manufacturing, and supply chain teams, as well as external toolmakers, to guide the entire tooling lifecycle—from early-stage DFM reviews through tool build, validation, and continuous improvement. This role is central to driving robust tooling solutions that support both new product introductions and long-term manufacturing success. Responsibilities

Advise product design teams on design-for-manufacturing principles to ensure plastic parts are optimized for injection molding processes Create comprehensive tooling requirements and specifications that align with part geometry, material, and production needs Assess and manage tooling vendors, providing technical oversight and supporting selection decisions based on capability, quality, cost, and timing Evaluate tool designs for performance, manufacturability, cost, and cycle efficiency, offering guidance and improvements as needed Lead tool development activities, from initial concept through final delivery, ensuring milestones are met and tools are production-ready Oversee tool trials and part validation efforts to confirm that molds produce components that meet dimensional and functional standards Address issues identified during mold trials or production launch, working cross-functionally to implement effective solutions Document tooling best practices, lessons learned, and technical standards to support continuous improvement initiatives Partner with operations and engineering teams to integrate new tools into production and drive long-term tooling reliability Support tooling cost analysis, supplier development, and early-stage quoting for new business opportunities Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Plastics Engineering, or a related technical field (Master’s degree a plus) Minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience with injection tooling for large plastic parts, including tool design, validation, and troubleshooting Strong background in managing tooling projects and working with external toolmakers and suppliers Solid understanding of injection molding processes, plastic material behavior, tool steel selection, cooling and venting strategies, and surface finish requirements Proven ability to lead tool reviews and drive problem-solving efforts during tool trials and production ramp-up Effective communicator with strong leadership skills and the ability to work with internal stakeholders and external partners Skilled in applying lean and continuous improvement principles to tooling design and development Highly detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working across multiple projects simultaneously Strategic thinker with a hands-on approach to technical challenges and process optimization Location and compensation

San Leandro, CA Salary range: $153,000.00 – $218,000.00
