About Retool
Nearly every company runs on custom software. Retool is building a development platform that combines traditional software development with a drag-and-drop UI editor and AI to help teams build internal tools faster. Our customers range from small startups to Fortune 500 companies leveraging internal tools to run business operations. Today, our customers span from small startups building their first operational tools to Fortune 500 companies building mission-critical apps for thousands of users across their business. If you’re interested in joining us, let us know! The Team and Role Data is the foundation of every Retool app, and the Resources team makes it seamless to connect, manage, and interact with data. As a designer here, you’ll shape experiences that allow builders to plug into databases, APIs, and event streams without friction. Your design work will directly impact how quickly and confidently customers bring ideas to life. At Retool, we expect a lot from our designers: own the full product design life-cycle, drive key product decisions, and maintain a relentless focus on impactful work. We balance convention and configuration, technical expressiveness and conceptual simplicity, and work closely with product teams while preserving space for designers to learn and collaborate. In this role, you'll Design intuitive flows for connecting and configuring data sources, from common integrations to niche systems. Balance technical depth with simplicity—make advanced concepts like event streams or query orchestration approachable for any builder. Translate complex customer problems into elegant UI solutions. Create consistency and clarity across 60+ integrations, ensuring data interactions feel native to Retool. Perform user research to identify problems and validate solutions. Produce the artifacts needed—specs, sketches, wireframes, mockups, prototypes, or code—to take UI ideas from conception to production. Participate in design reviews and share work regularly with designers, cross-functional teams, leadership, and the company. Contribute to Retool’s design system and component library. Help establish design team processes and uphold high standards for design and product quality. The Skillset You'll Bring Have a strong portfolio demonstrating generalist design skills and at least 5+ years of experience driving the product design lifecycle from end-to-end. Are excited about breaking down technically complex problems into abstractions, balancing ease of use, learnability, and power. Love thinking systematically about hard problems with tradeoffs and iterating to get details right. Are customer-obsessed and enjoy spending time with users. Have experience designing developer-centric products, creative software, and/or enterprise internal tools. Are an excellent communicator and consider writing a fundamental design skill. Thrive in ambiguity, prioritize work based on user needs and business goals, and drive product ideas forward. Are inspired to rethink how software is built.
