Requirements & Qualifications Required Certifications:
BLS (Basic Life Support)
ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
Preferred Certifications:
TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
Experience:
ICU experience required
Open to first-time travelers
Common Diagnoses & Patient Types Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
Septic Shock
Alcohol (ETOH) Withdrawal
Hypoxemia
Acute Respiratory Distress
COVID-19
Clinical Responsibilities Titration of Drips: Yes
Common Drips Used:
Propofol, Levophed, Dobutamine
Precedex, Fentanyl, Insulin
Esmolol, Versed, Ketamine, etc.
Telemetry:
Monitor techs are available (Mindray system)
RN must be comfortable interpreting tele strips
Staffing & Support Charge Nurse/Supervisor:
Yes, oversees MS, IMCU, and ICU
Typically does not carry a patient load unless needed
Nurse Aides:
Yes, shared with Med/Surg
Respiratory Therapy (RT):
In-house 24/7
RT performs all treatments
Physician Coverage:
Hospitalist on site 24/7
Intensivist on-site Mon–Fri (8 AM – 5 PM), with telemedicine coverage after hours and on weekends (in partnership with OHSU)
Shifts & Scheduling Hours: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM or 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
Scheduling:
2-week block schedules
Night shift staff typically grouped for 3–4 shifts in a row
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Holiday Requirement: May be included in holiday rotation if the holiday falls on a regular shift
Call/Standby Requirement: None
Floating Requirements May float to IMCU or Med/Surg with a full patient load
May float to the ER if prior ED experience
If no ER experience, may be asked to assist in the ED as Helping Hands
Orientation & Dress Code Orientation: 1–2 shifts with a preceptor
