Overview

Accountant I – State of Arkansas, Arkansas Department of Health. Position located in Little Rock, AR. Classification: Accountant I – Career Path. Pay Grade: SPC01. Salary Range: $58,700 - $86,876.

Job Summary

The Accountant I is responsible for performing professional accounting and financial tasks within a department. This position involves processing financial transactions, preparing reports, reconciling accounts, and ensuring compliance with state financial regulations and policies. The Accountant I will work closely with other financial staff to ensure accuracy and consistency in the agency’s financial operations.

Primary Responsibilities

• Prepare and maintain financial records, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all transactions.
• Assist in the preparation of financial reports, budgets, and forecasts in accordance with state regulations and policies.
• Reconcile accounts, ensuring discrepancies are identified and resolved in a timely manner.
• Prepare journal entries and ensure all entries are properly documented and in compliance with state accounting standards.
• Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, ensuring accuracy and proper documentation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

• Familiarity with governmental accounting principles, financial reporting, and budgeting processes.
• Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., PeopleSoft, QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel) and standard office applications.
• Skilled in preparing and presenting financial statements, budgets, and reports.
• Understanding of state and federal financial regulations and accounting standards.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university.

Licensure/Certifications

N/A. Other job-related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirements, except for certification or licensure requirements, upon approval of the Qualifications Review Committee.

Additional Information

• Occasional overtime may be required.
• Experience with federal grant processing, including automated payment systems, reconciliation and federal reporting preferred.
• Experience working with AASIS preferred.
• Experience working with Microsoft Office, especially Excel, Word, and Outlook, preferred.
• Knowledge of Arkansas Department of Health agency and funding structure preferred.
• Cost accounting experience preferred.
