Job Title : Senior Maintenance Engineer
Locatio n: Kenilworth, NJ or Freeport, NY (based on candidate residence in Long Island or New Jersey)
Salary : $140,000 DOE
Hours : Standard hours are typically 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM; flexibility required to start early or work late depending on site operations

Position Summary The Senior Maintenance Engineer plays a critical leadership role overseeing maintenance operations across four food manufacturing and distribution centers. This individual leads a team of facility managers, supervisors, and skilled technicians to maintain essential plant systems, including HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, boilers, high-pressure steam, air compressors, and food processing equipment. The role ensures safety, regulatory compliance, preventive and predictive maintenance planning, and execution of strategies that support operational uptime and food safety. The Senior Manager is also responsible for vendor oversight, CMMS performance, budget adherence, and fostering a culture of safety, technical excellence, and continuous improvement. --- Key Responsibilities Leadership & Team Oversight · Directly manage Facility Managers and Supervisors to align with plant priorities and maintenance KPIs. · Provide leadership, coaching, and professional development for a high-performing team of technicians across all shifts. · Ensure all staff consistently follow safety, food safety, and maintenance procedures. Preventive & Predictive Maintenance · Oversee development and execution of preventive maintenance (PM) and calibration schedules using the CMMS. · Drive predictive maintenance strategies and root cause analysis (RCA) to reduce unplanned downtime. · Collaborate with engineering and operations to plan plant shutdowns, installations, or system upgrades. Compliance & Safety · Maintain compliance with OSHA, FDA, USDA, EPA, FDNY, and local food production regulations. · Hold and maintain relevant certifications; ensure technician certifications are current (S95, S12, S13, G92, F60, F01, Q99, B27). · Promote a proactive safety culture through audits, training, and corrective action processes. Vendor & Contractor Management · Manage third-party service providers and contractors, ensuring scope, cost, and safety expectations are met. · Oversee service agreements, inspections, and emergency contractor work. · Coordinate work permits and Certificates of Fitness for on-site vendors as required. Facilities & Systems Oversight · Oversee operation and upkeep of HVAC, refrigeration, steam boilers, air compressors, fire protection systems, electrical infrastructure, and mechanical equipment. · Ensure rapid resolution of complex issues with internal technicians or external specialists. · Serve as the technical escalation point for advanced diagnostics and repairs. Budget & Inventory Management · Develop and manage departmental budgets for labor, parts, and service contracts. · Track maintenance spend and identify cost-saving initiatives in procurement, energy usage, and contractor efficiencies. · Oversee parts room operations to ensure inventory of critical spares and tools. Technology & Data Management · Manage maintenance systems including CMMS (e.g., ServiceDesk), BMS, and work order ticketing tools. · Ensure accurate documentation of maintenance activities, equipment history, compliance logs, and audit records. · Use CMMS data to report on technician productivity, equipment performance, and cost metrics. Cross-Functional Collaboration · Act as the primary maintenance liaison with Operations, Engineering, Quality Assurance, Sanitation, and Supply Chain teams. · Attend daily plant meetings to align on operational goals, downtime risks, and maintenance needs. · Support new equipment installations and production line changes with technical planning and resources. --- Qualifications Education · Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, Industrial Technology, or related technical discipline. · Advanced certifications in maintenance or operations (CPMM, Six Sigma, TPM) preferred. Experience · 8+ years of progressive maintenance experience in industrial or food manufacturing environments. · 5+ years in a supervisory or senior management role overseeing facilities, maintenance teams, and capital projects. Technical Competencies · Knowledge of high-tension electrical systems, refrigeration, high-pressure steam boilers, HVAC, compressors, and mechanical systems. · Experience with CMMS, BMS, Microsoft Excel, and Outlook. · Familiarity with food-grade equipment, sanitary maintenance practices, and regulatory compliance (FDA, OSHA, EPA). Certifications (Preferred or Required) · Refrigeration License (required) · High Pressure Boiler License (preferred) · FDNY Certificates of Fitness: S95, S12, S13, G92, F60, F01, Q99, B27 (or willingness to obtain) · OSHA 30, EPA 608, CPR/First Aid certifications preferred --- Key Skills & Traits · Strong leadership, people development, and conflict resolution abilities · Highly organized with excellent time management and planning skills · Strong written and verbal communication skills; bilingual English/Spanish a plus · Analytical thinker with results-driven and problem-solving mindset · Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and on-call support for critical issues --- Physical Requirements · Ability to lift up to 50 lbs; bend, stand, walk, and climb ladders as needed · Comfortable working in refrigerated environments (below 40°F), on rooftops, and around noisy machinery · Must be able to respond quickly to emergencies across a large facility footprint
