Foodland
As the Director of General Merchandise, you'll drive the vision, strategy, and execution of our general merchandise offerings - from seasonal items to home goods and everyday essentials. You'll work closely with company leadership to ensure alignment with customer expectations, market trends, and our brand standards. Your leadership will influence product selection, pricing, vendor partnerships, merchandising execution, and team development.
This is a highly visible role that requires a mix of retail acumen, customer insight, strategic thinking, and the ability to lead cross-functional teams.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership:
Define and execute the general merchandise strategy in alignment with company goals and Hawai'i's unique marketplace. Merchandising Excellence:
Oversee product assortment, planograms, and in-store presentation with a focus on freshness, relevance, and innovation. Sales Performance:
Drive category growth through data-driven planning, promotional strategy, and effective inventory management. Vendor & Supplier Partnerships:
Build strong relationships with local and national vendors to secure reliable supply, quality products, and competitive pricing. Customer Insight:
Stay ahead of local trends and customer needs, integrating feedback and analytics into product and merchandising decisions. Team Leadership:
Inspire, develop, and lead both corporate and store-level teams to deliver operational excellence and high service standards. Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Partner with marketing, store operations, procurement, and other internal teams to roll out new programs and initiatives. Compliance & Standards:
Ensure department operations meet internal guidelines and regulatory requirements, including safety, quality, and workplace practices. What We're Looking For Proven leadership experience in general merchandise or retail merchandising (minimum 3–5 years in a multi-unit or corporate-level role). A track record of improving sales, profitability, and customer engagement through merchandising and strategy. Strong understanding of Hawai'i's local market, culture, and customer expectations. Experience with category management, vendor negotiation, inventory control, and pricing strategy. Collaborative leadership style with strong team-building, mentoring, and communication skills. Excellent analytical and project management capabilities. Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience required. Work Environment This position is based in Honolulu and requires regular visits to stores across the islands. Occasional neighbor island, mainland and travel may be required for vendor meetings, industry shows, or company initiatives.
