Civil Engineer - Data Center Site Development - Ashburn, VA

This role is ideal for a smart, sharp, and driven engineer with a strong grasp of concept-level design, schematics, and construction drawings. The ideal candidate will be proficient in AutoCAD and Revit, with experience in civil design for mission-critical environments.
As a subject matter expert, you will have a direct impact on the design of prototypical Data Center sites, provide technical design guidance and vendor oversight, solve large-scale implementation issues, and build a strong understanding of site design and program requirements.
The successful candidate will develop and implement design strategies to expand the firm’s expertise, footprint and profitability in Critical Facilities and Digital Infrastructure. Our client is looking for a Critical Facilities Development Specialist that has expertise in Civil Engineering and design for data center and infrastructure development efforts, including property diligence, site and facility design, and utility interconnection.
Responsibilities:
Develop preliminary site layout concepts using Civil 3D, incorporating grading, utilities, and circulation patterns while maintaining flexibility for design evolution
Utilize AutoCAD and Revit to produce high-quality designs and documentation
Effectively communicate design standards to internal and external project partners
Maintain strategic relationships with in-region stakeholders
Create / communicate conceptual designs gathered from meetings and create/maintain project documentation pre- sale, prior to construction, during, and after construction
Develop and maintain design standards, design prototypes, and template specifications related to site design for Data Centers and supporting infrastructure.
Create, review, and release design RFPs for various data center projects
Travel for site assessments when needed, internal design meetings, construction review, and interfacing with authorities having jurisdiction
Foresee and manage project-specific cost and schedules variables
Manage multiple fast paced projects simultaneously
Lead initiatives aimed at improving cost, quality, schedule, and consistency
Prepare proposals, presentations, and briefings
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure designs align with industry best practices
Managing diligence efforts, optimizing utility and network interconnections, working with design and construction teams
Manage our external civil design consultants through the Data Center design and construction process.
Review designs for site layout, grading, power substations, storm water, utilities, and pavement.
Coordinate with internal and external architectural, structural, and MEP design engineers
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering a MUST
Professional Engineer or on track for a PE (current FE or EIT) a big plus
5+ years’ experience in civil design for Data Centers or Mission Critical facilities with working knowledge of land use and land development conventional practices
Previous experience working at an Engineering Consulting firm a MUST
Experience with hyperscale / colo / enterprise data center design / mission critical facilities design projects a must
Site selection and / or existing asset acquisition experience a plus as they need someone that can assist with determining the viability of converting an existing building /property to a Data Center
Demonstrated ability to evaluate the design and constructability of site design by third-party consultants
Experience with concept-level design, reviewing drawings, and schematics
Experience performing field observations during construction
Proficiency in understanding and applying building codes, permitting, variances, local regulations, and standards
Knowledge of mission critical equipment and systems, design process, pre-construction requirements and the construction process
Proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bluebeam, Revit, BIM and MS Office
Ability to effectively communicate complex project details and market information and analysis at all organizational levels to include senior leadership, utility partners, and local stakeholders
Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects with internal staff, external consultants, vendors, and other stakeholders
Must be detail-oriented, highly organized, and able to manage multiple tasks efficiently
Self Starter, self motivated, Strong problem-solving skills and should prioritize well and have the ability to successfully work independently and within a team
Active participant in local data center organizations (7x24, AFCOM, DCD, Uptime Institute, DICE Bisnow, etc.)
Previous experience in the Military / Military veterans in all branches that have experience with Electrical / Mechanical is a huge plus
