Field Mechanic III
Position Summary:
Travel to various locations to diagnose and perform complex maintenance and repair work on vehicles, machinery, and heavy-duty equipment in the field and on job sites. Conduct visual inspections, perform preventative maintenance, and fuel off-site equipment. This is a safety-sensitive position subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Supervision Received and Exercised:
Receive direction from supervisory or management staff
May provide technical and functional guidance to mechanical maintenance staff
Essential Functions:
Diagnose and perform complex repairs on vehicles, machinery, and heavy-duty field equipment
Lubricate and fuel equipment; perform minor field repairs such as adjusting tracks, repairing hydraulic hoses, and changing teeth
Assist in training less experienced mechanics; provide guidance on maintenance procedures and techniques
Inspect and diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues; report findings to management
Conduct diagnostics on electronic fuel systems and computer-controlled engines
Perform precision measurements and calibrations on equipment and tools
Diagnose and repair transmissions and differential assemblies
Replace components, perform engine tune-ups, rebuild engines, and conduct safety inspections
Perform welding and fabrication on damaged frames and specialized equipment
Estimate time, materials, and equipment needed for tasks; recommend requisitions
Interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and hydrostatic systems
Operate shop machinery including lathes, presses, grinders, and blasters
Maintain records of preventive maintenance; input data and prepare reports
Drive commercial vehicles for delivery, pickup, and road testing
Perform emergency roadside diagnostics and repairs
Supplemental Functions:
Maintain cleanliness and general upkeep of the shop
Lead and coordinate mechanical maintenance staff as needed
Perform other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
High school diploma or GED
Two (2) years of technical training in automotive maintenance and mechanical repair
Three (3) years of experience in minor and major automotive maintenance and repair
Additional Requirements (Division-Specific):
Landfill Division:
Valid NM CDL (Class A or B) with Hazardous Materials Endorsement; City Operator's Permit within 6 months Clean City Division:
Valid NM CDL (Class A or B); City Operator's Permit within 6 months Preferred Knowledge: Mechanical inspection and repair techniques for internal combustion and diesel engines Operation of automotive and heavy equipment systems Electronic fuel and computer-controlled systems Electrical and hydraulic systems Safety practices and occupational hazards Preferred Skills & Abilities: Perform complex mechanical repairs and diagnostics Operate automotive and mechanical repair equipment Diagnose and repair hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems Conduct tune-ups and electronic component repairs Work independently and follow instructions Communicate clearly and maintain effective working relationships Perform job functions with or without reasonable accommodation Working Conditions: Environment: Field-based; exposure to noise, dust, grease, fumes, and heavy equipment Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting and carrying; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling; prolonged standing; operating motorized equipment
