Residence Counselor Lines of Supervision:

The Residence Counselor is directly responsible to the Program Director and/or Assistant Program Director. Hours : Hourly Position, Non-Exempt, Working 40 Hours Responsibilities:

The Residence Counselor is responsible for working in a group home setting and is expected to possess the necessary skills and understanding of agency purpose and procedures to achieve these tasks with minimal supervision. Primary responsibilities and duties of the Residence Counselor will include: ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES 1. Counseling and Problem-Solving Act as an effective role model. Foster open communication, and show understanding, support, and respect to all residents. Provide supportive, goal-oriented counseling when needed, with a focus on decision-making and problem-solving skills. Develop and implement all resident service plans. Orient residents. Be alert to potential crisis, intervene in crisis and emergencies, and make appropriate notifications and file appropriate reports. Demonstrate appropriate assessment and crisis intervention skills. Teach coping skills to assist resident in dealing with daily activities. Teach stress management skills and provide options for residents to deal with stress. 2. Case Management Through other public and private agencies, advocate for financial and medical assistance for residents. When appropriate, employment or educational opportunities. Assist in coordination of residents' care through routine and emergency contacts with other mental health providers. Coordinate with agency Case Manager to obtain funding and appropriate services. 3. Communication and Team Coordination Participate in weekly staff meetings and team process. Using behavioral terms, complete daily recordkeeping and documentation on residents. Know and follow agency program procedures and policies. 4. Teaching of Independent Living Skills Teach proper nutrition, including menu planning, preparation of grocery lists, marketing, reading recipes, cooking and meal preparation, food storage, incorporating leftovers in menu planning. Teach residents to use basic housekeeping skills. Help residents in the development of social skills. Promote and encourage the use of community resources. Instruct and supervise residents in appropriate personal hygiene.• Assist residents in developing money management skills needed for independent budgeting and banking. Provide instruction in the use of public transportation. Teach and encourage residents to advocate for themselves. 5. Medication Management When designated to do so by Program Director, order medications to maintain an adequate supply of residents' medications. Train and supervise residents in self-medication. Follow emergency procedures Ensure complete documentation according to medication procedures. 6. Site Maintenance and Safety Mohawk's programs are multi-level with stairs only. Employees must be able to travel to all levels of the facility. Contribute to the general maintenance and upkeep of the program. Report malfunctions of equipment or facility and property-related problems to appropriate personnel. Instruct residents in fire drill methods and engage in routine testing. Maintain program vehicle in working condition and make necessary repairs. Regular attendance to insure program coverage OTHER JOB DUTIES 7. Recreational Planning Encourage residents to participate in recreational activities and assist them to structure leisure time. Develop and implement structured recreational activities. Familiarize residents with the resources available to them in the community. 8. Budgeting Purchase items necessary for the general upkeep of the program. Record and document expenditures for petty cash transactions. Ensure there is cash on-hand for program and activities. Maintain and balance residents' allowance and money management accounts.
