The Mechanic is a full-time, salary non-exempt position that reports to the Logistics Specialist and maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs the automotive fleet and mechanical equipment of the Fire District. The incumbent in this position must possess strong technical and interpersonal skills, have the ability to work under general supervision, adjust to changing priorities, and provide technical support to District personnel. Responsibilities

  • Assists in formulating and following administrative controls under the vehicle maintenance function; assists in establishing of record control under assigned areas; assists in the preparation of bid specifications when purchasing new or repairing District-owned equipment; assists when needed in establishing minimum standards for maintenance performance.
  • Repair, overhaul, and maintain District power tools, vehicles, and apparatus to include power saws, staff vehicles, rescue vehicles, medic units, fire engines, boats, off road vehicles, and ladder trucks.
  • Repair work may include but is not limited to tires, suspension, chassis, brakes, engines, transmissions, aerial equipment, fire pumps, electrical systems, emergency lighting, and communications equipment.
  • Communicate with employees on deficiencies/problems to determine cause and solutions to mechanical and electrical problems. When work is completed and vehicle/apparatus returns to service, explain to crews what was repaired.
  • Coordinate maintenance of vehicles with shift Battalion Chiefs or designee, individuals with assigned vehicles and the Logistics Specialist.
  • Perform safety inspections of vehicles and equipment to identify safety hazards and make necessary repairs to assure safe operation.
  • Act as a liaison between the District and vendors or other agencies while performing assigned responsibilities. Coordinate repairs with outside shops when needed and inspect completed work for accuracy and completeness.
  • May design and fabricate parts and tools; perform gas and electric welding; and paint and perform body work to repair, replace, or rebuild needed parts and equipment.
  • Research, locate, and order needed parts and supplies.
  • Maintain timely and accurate electronic records of time, materials, parts, and work performed.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to users.
  • May obtain quotes from vendors for goods and services in alignment with procurement policies.

Qualifications

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Completion of a two-year college or trade school for mechanical trade.
  • Five (5) years of minimally supervised work as a mechanic. Mechanic work should include one of, or a combination of, the following fields: automotive, commercial truck (medium to heavy), and/or heavy equipment.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak the English language.
  • This position requires the use of a personal or District vehicle while conducting District business. The individual must be physically capable of operating motor vehicles safely and must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and Commercial Driver's License endorsement with the air brake restriction lifted.
  • Level 1 Emergency Vehicle Technician Certifications strongly preferred (required within 12 months after appointment). Level 2 and Level 3-Master certifications may be expected during employment.
  • Pre-employment testing required: ability to pass a technical skills evaluation, drug test, and standard department background check including criminal history and driving record review.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crawl, and crouch. The employee must frequently lift, move and/or carry tools and parts up to 75 pounds and occasionally heavier equipment up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Specific hearing abilities required by this job include the ability to hear and understand phone and radio transmissions in a typical office setting and/or in an environment which may contain large amounts of background noise.
  • The work is performed primarily in an apparatus bay environment but may have to work in inclement weather, a variety of temperatures, and precipitation/snow. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and in moderately noisy environments.
  • N normally works a 40-hour week, either Monday-Friday or 4 10-hour workdays Monday-Thursday. The work schedule may be adjusted to meet the needs of the District. Response to certain incidents, outside of normal work hours, is an essential component of this position. To ensure the continuity of operations, the incumbent of this position may be required to occasionally be on-call.
