Responsibilities

Teacher - Private Day and Residential. The teacher participates as a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team in provision on educational instruction to students. The Teacher will provide classroom instruction with attendant documentation for both the facility record and for each student’s school system. Operates under the guidelines of the program, regulatory agencies and the State Board of Education. In most instances, class size is 6-10 students of ages 5 to 12 (Children) or 13 to 18 (Adolescents), however the Teacher also has Homeroom responsibilities. Position duties include Referral Development activities and contact with school systems. Performs other duties as assigned.

Poplar Springs Hospital is a 183 bed acute care and residential facility dedicated to the full continuum of behavioral health services for adults and adolescents. We offer behavioral and psychological treatment through acute programs, adolescent residential programs, and programs for active duty military. The facility is located in Petersburg, Virginia, 20 minutes south of Richmond and 50 minutes north of North Carolina, on 25 acres in a serene setting.

Qualifications

Position Requirements:

Licensure/Certification/Registration:

  • Virginia Provisional Teaching Certificate
  • Current certification in Special Education and endorsement in Emotional Disabilities AND Specific Learning Disabilities OR endorsement in Special Education General Education Curriculum K-12 required
  • Current certification in CPR, HWC and First Aid
  • Current certification in medication management (Dayschool only)

Education/Experience:

  • Minimum four year degree
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Demonstrated teaching ability in an inpatient psychiatric setting
  • Demonstrated ability to work with adolescents 11 to 17 years of age

General Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age per Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services
  • Must have patience, tact, and a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm
  • Good communication skills; ability to read, write, speak, and understand English
  • Basic clerical skills; basic experience with office equipment
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Ability to problem solve and accept feedback when warranted
  • Willingness to interact with patients with varying levels of cognitive functioning
