Based out of Asheville, NC, Sugar Hollow Solar offers energy solutions for homes, farms, small businesses and other commercial properties by designing and installing solar electric systems (rooftop or ground-mounted), battery backup systems and EV charger stations, as well as, systems maintenance.

Sugar Hollow Solar is hiring a Design Specialist! This key position is responsible for creating accurate system designs for residential projects based on site analysis, including roof conditions and shading, to meet Sugar Hollow Solar clients energy needs. The role is responsible for refining proposal designs after sale, verifying production estimates are within tolerance and preparing technical documentation. In addition, the Design Specialist collaborates with project teams to ensure code-compliant installations and provides technical support during installation and commissioning, including troubleshooting as needed.

Our ideal candidate brings strong foundational knowledge of photovoltaic (PV) systems, battery storage, solid experience with solar design, drafting or a related field to the position and believes in the power of renewable energy!

Job Duties & Responsibilities: Creates detailed models and layouts of PV and ESS systems, ensuring appropriate placement of panels and other equipment Reviews the sold project proposal, pricing and preliminary design. Analyzes site survey data, roof conditions and shading to confirm that the proposed system is installable and will perform as intended for the customer Updates layouts and production estimates after the site survey using updated survey imagery and site model. Ensures designs meet all applicable codes, utility interconnection requirements and jurisdictional permitting standards Creates detailed project documentation, including the system electrical diagram, installation plan set and installation instructions Collaborates with internal stakeholders (design, sales, procurement, pre-construction) to ensure proper design, profitability and installability of Sugar Hollow Solar systems Provides technical support during installations and commissioning and helps to troubleshoot any issues that may arise Assist the Proposal Design Specialist as needed Assist the Design & Engineering Manager with special projects as needed.

Qualifications Minimum of 1 year of solar design, drafting or a related field experience required High school diploma or GED required Associates degree in Renewable Energy, Engineering, Architecture, Environmental Science or a related technical field preferred Coursework or training in solar energy systems, electrical theory, or CAD/drafting preferred Valid driver license required NABCEP certification preferred

Knowledge Skills and Abilities Strong understanding of assessment principles, including roof orientation, tilt and shading impacts and system sizing and energy offset calculations Strong foundational knowledge of photovoltaic (PV) systems, battery storage integration, applicable components and residential electrical systems Familiar with solar design and modeling software including Aurora, Scanifly, Helioscope, etc. Ability to read and interpret site photos, plans, and technical documentation Strong written and verbal communication for technical documentation and cross-team collaboration Ability to adapt to changing project requirements and timelines Familiarity with NEC (National Electrical Code) and local code requirements (preferred) Strong attention to detail, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team Proficient technical drawing and layout development skills Familiar with solar modeling and design software: Aurora, Scanifly, Helioscope, etc. Exceptional problem-solving abilities Able to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams including project managers and field staff

Rate: $24.00-$26.50/HR This is a remote position in Asheville NC with a requirement to be in office for All-Staff Meetings (4-12 times annually)
