POSITION SUMMARY Hiring Incentive Bonus Available! The City of Fort Lauderdale is now offering a $9,000 signing bonus to external candidates who successfully complete the selection process and are hired as a Senior Utilities Mechanic (5 positions currently available ) . Current City employees are not eligible for the Hiring Incentive Bonus.
Oversees the installations, maintenance, fabrication, and repair of mechanical equipment employed in the operation of water and wastewater treatment plants, well fields, storm stations, pump stations, small engine shops, motor shops, tanks, and all other divisions of the Utilities Department. Repairs and installs pumps, motors, valves, piping, chemical equipment, conveyers, presses, screens, gear boxes, facility carts and all other facility machinery and equipment and performs preventative maintenance and inspections.
In accordance with Article 24 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769, for posting purposes this open-competitive job posting shall be considered as a simultaneous internal and external posting (it is open to both internal City employees and external applicants).
NOTE: This position will report to the Prospect Lake Clean Water Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida: A new state-of-the-art, membrane-based potable water treatment facility, being developed via a 30-year public-private partnership between the City of Fort Lauderdale, IDE Technologies, and Ridgewood Infrastructure. Designed to replace the nearly 70-year-old Fiveash plant, it will draw water from the Biscayne Aquifer and has a capacity of 50 million gallons per day. The plant will combine nanofiltration (treating about 70% of flow) and ion-exchange (the remaining 30%) to deliver clear, high-quality potable water while minimizing raw water losses and energy use.
This position will remain open until a sufficient number of qualified applications have been received.
Acts as lead worker in directing the work of crew members, including training, guidance, and counseling.
Participates in the installation, service, maintenance, and repair of pumps, motors, chlorinators, and other machinery and equipment.
Inspects all mechanical equipment; evaluates performance; makes recommendations to the assigned supervisor as to maintenance and repair requirements.
Operates and cares for power tools in maintaining, fabricating, and repairing parts of equipment; operates large mobile equipment such as a boom truck, a forklift, a hoist or a crane, when assigned.
Reviews equipment manuals and maintenance records to develop work plans.
Performs welding, acetylene burning, brazing, soldering, minor carpentry, and painting, as assigned.
Maintains proper working condition of all tools, equipment, and machinery; orders parts, as needed.
Procures parts and components as needed.
Reading drawing specifications and manufacturer's data sheets.
Works around medium voltage, rotating equipment and various hazardous chemicals.
May be required to perform "stand-by duty", being available and responding to off-duty emergency call-ins to effect repairs.
Have successfully graduated from a standard high school or trade school or possess a G.Three (3) or more years of experience in mechanical maintenance and repair work.
# An associate's or higher-level degree from an accredited college or university in a job-related field, may substitute for up to one (1) year of the required experience.
# A valid State of Florida Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with airbrake endorsement, with an acceptable driving record may be required in certain positions.

Prior work experience in a water or wastewater treatment plant.
