Under the supervision and direction of the Dental Director and staff dentist(s), the Dental Assistant plays a key role in supporting the daily operations of the Dental Department. This position assists the dentist, helps coordinate clinic flow, maintains dental equipment and operatories, and contributes to the overall smooth functioning of the dental clinic.
Responsibilities
- Assist the dentist during dental procedures.
- Perform sterilization and prepare operatories for patient care.
- Coordinate daily operations of the dental department, including clinic flow and maintenance of dental equipment.
- Collaborate with the Dental Receptionist to ensure efficient patient management.
- Inventory and order dental materials and supplies with appropriate approval.
- Cross-train for front desk duties and provide coverage as needed.
- Perform all dental assistant functions as directed by the Dental Director.
- Carry out duties associated with any obtained certifications, such as sealant application.
- Comply with OSHA requirements, including infection control and handling of hazardous and biohazardous waste.
- Maintain operatories according to Bloodborne Pathogens Policy.
- Participate in department safety meetings and uphold safety standards.
- Adhere to guidelines outlined in the Policies and Procedures Manual.
- Arrive on time and fully prepared for each dental session.
- Perform any additional duties assigned by the Dental Director.
Required Qualifications
- Education reflecting specialized knowledge of dental practices, procedures, and terminology.
- Valid X-ray license and ability to assist the dentist within licensure scope.
- Coronal polishing certificate preferred; non-R.D.A. candidates expected to work toward licensure.
- Minimum of one-year internship and one year of dental assisting experience.
- Sensitivity to the healthcare needs and culture of American Indian populations.
- Ability to supervise employees and work collaboratively with co-workers.
- Strong customer service skills and ability to interact with diverse populations.
- Capacity to perform multiple administrative tasks accurately and efficiently.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team within diverse environments.
- Demonstrated ethical conduct, honesty, professionalism, and sound judgment.
- Strict adherence to confidentiality policies.
- Commitment to the mission of the organization, with experience in nonprofit health organizations preferred.
- Proficiency in office systems, computer literacy, and familiarity with Windows OS and common software (Microsoft Office Suite, Publisher, Photoshop).
- Knowledge of and ability to work with American Indian communities and other minority groups.
- Possession of a valid California Driver License, automobile insurance, and a clean driving record.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in a fast-paced community health clinic environment.
- Capability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds and perform frequent stooping, squatting, or bending.
- Manual dexterity, finger coordination, and eye-hand coordination necessary for job tasks.
- Ability to visually observe and communicate effectively with patients and staff.
- Capacity for extensive computer and telephone work communicating with staff, patients, and vendors.
