About the Role
The Chief Operating & Human Resources Officer will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and operational oversight across critical internal functions, including HR, facilities, safety, IT, and core program areas such as Exhibits, Education, Wildlife, Volunteers, and Conservation. This role emphasizes people leadership, focusing on team development, cross-functional collaboration, and organizational effectiveness while ensuring alignment with the mission and values of equity, diversity, and inclusion. The CO&HRO oversees and develops a team of managers across multiple departments, driving operational efficiency, compliance, and strategic growth. As a member of the senior leadership team, the CO&HRO partners with the Executive Director to set long-term strategies, cultivate an inclusive organizational culture, and ensure that staff, resources, and programs align with the institution’s vision for continued growth and impact. The ideal candidate will bring 10+ years of management experience in operating a facility such as a museum, zoo, or school, along with proven expertise in organizational leadership, HR strategy, and cross-functional management. They should demonstrate strong skills in developing and motivating teams, managing performance, and serving as an effective coach and role model for other managers. A deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is essential, with prior experience fostering positive and equitable workplace cultures. Strong strategic thinking, delegation, and operational oversight skills are required, as well as the ability to anticipate workforce needs, close skill gaps, and attract and retain top talent. Candidates should be collaborative leaders with excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational development capabilities.
