Responsibilities

  • Truck Driver (Heavy) is a specialized and highly responsible position that combines the skills of a commercial heavy truck driver with the critical knowledge and certifications required to transport hazardous materials for the Department of Defense.
  • Understand and comply with all Naval Supply Procedures.
  • Operate a vehicle of up to 26,000 pounds gross weight that is used to transport HAZMAT between the various HAZMAT Minimization (HAZMIN) Centers.
  • Assist in loading and downloading of the vehicle to ensure the load is properly loaded, stable, and not leaking.
  • Operate Material Handling Equipment (MHE) including forklifts.
  • Receive HAZMAT from customers and commercial carriers.
  • Work may be reviewed by the Supervisor for general compliance with accepted practices.
  • Prepare shipping documents as required by the various regulatory agencies and maintain trip records and logs. Report accidents or problems to supervisor, TA and COR/TOM.
  • Have the skill and knowledge to recognize HAZMAT shipments, have training and certification to complete shipping papers, and properly placard the vehicle.
  • Be knowledgeable of 49 CFR and other related documents and certify in accordance with 49 CFR. Understand packing requirements and compatibility restrictions on the load and direct loading to avoid compatibility problems.
  • Operate with independence and be responsible for the safe operation of the vehicle and equipment; immediately report any damage to Government property, personal injuries and/or hazardous conditions to the assigned government representative.
  • Performs all other position-related duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Requirements

  • Possess a minimum of two (2) years logistical experience, with at least two (2) years in a Navy or Marine Corps environment.
  • Knowledgeable of 49 CFR requirements as it relates to HAZMAT.
  • Must pass a periodic physical examination as specified by Naval Medical Command (NAVMED) P-117 published by the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED). Each MHE operator must possess a current Medical Examiner's Certificate or proof of a current medical examination document on their license.
  • Must have completed DOT training and possess certification to prepare HAZMAT shipping papers and certify HAZMAT shipments in accordance with 49 CFR.
  • Must hold a state CDL with "H" endorsement. The contractor shall be able to pass both the written and the driving portion of the examination.
