Overview
The purpose of this position is to perform construction and maintenance work in support of the goals and mission of the Streets and Construction Programs in the Public Works Department.
This position is safety sensitive and subject to random drug and alcohol testing. The position is also driving essential and must conform to the Town's Safe Driving and Accident Policy and procedures.
Compensation
The Hiring Range for the Construction I-III positions are as follows:
- CW I: $31,959.00 - $42,341.00
- CW II: $35,235.00 - $46,681.00
- CW III: $40,789.00 - $54,039.00
Responsibilities
- Performs construction maintenance, repair, and improvement activities.
- Operates and maintains equipment and hand tools.
- Assists in masonry work such as mixing concrete and mortar, supplying materials, digging, setting forms, pouring concrete, etc.
- Assists with inclement weather and special event response.
- Assists in traffic control measures to provide a safe work zone, including proper placement of signs and cones.
- Assists in leaf collection.
- Skilled in construction methods and practices.
- Familiar with construction and masonry maintenance equipment.
- Performs other tasks as assigned.
Knowledge of
- Construction Worker I – No general construction methods and practices knowledge is required.
- Construction Worker II – Basic construction methods and practices of sidewalk repair, concrete construction, and construction maintenance activities.
- Construction Worker III – Skilled construction methods and practices of sidewalk repair, concrete construction, and construction maintenance activities.
Ability
- All levels:
- Read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations;
- Communicate effectively (orally and in writing);
- Model behaviors that are consistent with the Town’s values of RESPECT;
- Work a flexible schedule, including on-call, holidays, weekends, and inclement weather, on an as-needed basis;
- Perform routine assignments with a team.
- Construction Worker II: Work independently or with teams to perform routine assignments; Occasionally operate light equipment.
- Construction Worker III: Perform skilled tasks; operate various equipment related to the program; perform preventive maintenance on equipment; and perform construction maintenance activities.
Education
- Construction Worker I – No high school diploma or equivalency is required.
- Construction Worker II-III – High school diploma or equivalency or a combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties.
Experience
- Construction Worker I – No experience required.
- Construction Worker II – At least one year of job-related experience.
- Construction Worker III – At least three years of job-related experience.
Certification
- All Levels – Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Construction Worker II/III – Successful completion or ability to readily obtain the work zone traffic control certification.
- Construction Worker III – Possession of or ability to readily obtain a minimum of a Class B CDL with Tanker Endorsements issued by the State of North Carolina. Successful completion or ability to readily obtain the Competent Person Certification in Shoring and Trenching or Confined Space Rescue.
