Position Description
The Director of Clinical Education (DCE) must be responsible for all aspects of the clinical experiences of students enrolled in the program, including organization, administration, continuous review and revision, planning for and development of locations (with appropriate supervision) for evolving practice skills, and the general effectiveness of the clinical experience (CoARC Standard 2.07).
The DCE must have regular and consistent contact with students, clinical faculty, and clinical affiliates in all program locations (CoARC Standard 2.10).
Qualifications
The DCE of an associate degree program must have earned at least a baccalaureate degree from an academic institution accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) 2 (CoARC Standard 2.08).
The DCE must: a) hold a valid RRT credential and current state license; b) have a minimum of four (4) years’ experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist with at least two (2) years in clinical respiratory care; c) have a minimum of two (2) years’ experience teaching in an accredited respiratory care program either as an appointed faculty member or as a clinical preceptor (CoARC Standard 2.09).
In addition, the PD:
Teaches some courses, substitutes faculty as needed, supervises didactic and clinical faculty and participates in Program and Advisory Board Committee meetings.
Is responsible for all aspects of students’ practicum, including the preparation of clinical practicum packages.
Conducts individual reviews for current students as well as for graduates on request.
Interviews faculty and student candidates in conjunction with the PD.
Oversees students’ clinical progress and conducts academic advisement as required, at time in conjunction with other professors.
Conducts IRR trials together with the PD at clinical sites.
Oversees and reviews curriculum and prepares clinical guidelines for clinical faculty to conduct post clinical conferences including practicum specific topics.
Oversees clinical and final exam summaries to assess weakness areas, and makes recommendations to remediate these issues as needed.
