Madhani Lab - Junior Specialist
Biochemistry and Biophysics

A Junior Specialist position is currently available for immediate employment in the Madhani laboratory (madhanilab.ucsf.edu) at the University of California, San Francisco in the Genentech Hall Building (at the Mission Bay campus) to study pathogenesis by Cryptococcus neoformans.
C. neoformans is a budding yeast, which is responsible for hundreds of thousands of infections worldwide in highly immunocompromised patients, including organ transplant patients and individuals infected with HIV.
Responsibilities include molecular cloning, C. neoformans strain construction, immunoblotting, DNA/RNA purification, qRT-PCR, mammalian cell culture, and mouse handling. Secondary duties include: laboratory organization, ordering, and ensuring safety compliance. The employee will work very closely with and receive training from senior scientists in the laboratory, including staff scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students.
Required Qualifications:
Baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics or related fields or at least four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
Highly motivated individual who has demonstrated a passion for scientific research.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bioinformatics skills, including NGS data analysis.
Previous independent laboratory experience outside of courses is strongly preferred.
>1 yr experience in molecular genetics, biochemistry, and cell culture (cloning, PCR, qPCR, immunoblotting, and mammalian cell culture) is strongly preferred.
>6-month experience with mouse handling is also strongly preferred.
Effective communicator, able to take the initiative to address research issues, be able to work independently, be detail-oriented and organized, and be a team player who works well with other members of the lab.
Exhibit a strong commitment to performing scientific research.
Two-year commitment is highly preferred.
See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $55,000-$58,600.
