About Tufts University College
Tufts University College (UC) is Tufts' hub for innovative, accessible, and inclusive education. Since its founding in 2018, UC has grown rapidly, running Pre-College Programs, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, the Center for Professional and Workforce Impact, and a wide range of summer and professional programs. UC is a fast-paced, collaborative environment where professionals who care deeply about higher education create new ways for diverse learners to access Tufts' world-class education.
About the Center for Professional and Workforce Impact The Center empowers learners, employers, educators, and communities to adapt to the changing workforce through flexible educational programs, partnerships, and applied research. Its portfolio includes short courses, workshops, cohort programs, and micro-credentials that upskill and reskill the workforce of the future.
About the Program The
STEM Career Advantage Academy (SCAA)
is one of the Center's signature initiatives, launching at Tufts in summer 2026. Designed to equip STEM undergraduate and advanced high school students with critical leadership and professional skills, the program builds capacity in negotiation, communication, networking, and collaborative problem-solving-skills increasingly required at the start of a STEM internship and career.
Program Achievements to Date Formerly known as the Leadership Academy (LA), the program has been piloted and refined over five years with philanthropic funding from Pivotal Ventures (2019) and Reboot Representation (2023-2024), both Melinda French Gates initiatives. To date, it has served 300 students from 30 institutions, delivering 40 hours of immersive instruction and mentoring with instruction evenly split between industry practitioners and academics (including Harvard Kennedy School faculty).
Evaluation data-including findings published in peer-reviewed research-shows measurable gains in student confidence, negotiation skills, and workplace readiness, supported by active alumni and industry involvement. With the research phase complete, the program is now ready to scale under its new name and expanded scope at Tufts.
The Tufts STEM Career Advantage Academy will feature a 9-module online summer program, workshops led by academics and practitioners, a 9-month coaching program with industry mentors, alumni booster sessions, and a longitudinal study tracking long-term outcomes. Over time, the program will expand to reach different student populations, allowing micro-credentialing and certification.
Students can leverage the experience immediately during college years for persistence in hard majors and success in internships. And then, importantly, this serves as a foundational advanced prep for success in workplace entry/ first jobs, and early careers.
