Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Analyst
(HR Title = Assistant Project Geospatial Scientist) for SWCA's Great Basin operations. This position will support our Water Resources GIS team and will collaborate with and support other SWCA offices across the country. This is an hourly, regular (with benefits), non-exempt position. Application Deadline: Our team will begin reviewing applications immediately, and interviews will be scheduled with qualified candidates on a rolling basis. What you will accomplish
The Assistant Project Geospatial Scientist will work with the Water Resources GIS team and perform modeling, database management, geospatial analysis and geoprocessing of data, create maps for reports, and occasionally support GIS for fieldwork. The position involves working both independently and as part of a team, and solving problems related to data research, data management, and data visualization. Responsibilities include: May temporarily direct the work of one or more junior staff members with project specific work. Troubleshoot routine problems with guidance from supervisor or other Subject Matter Expert (SME). Apply basic knowledge of water resources and hydrologic processes to the job. Produce moderately complex cartographic quality maps adhering to SWCA or client mapping templates. Complete individual tasks of medium complexity or duration with minimal oversight and review of work products. Support the overall management and organization of data associated with projects. Document workflows and processes used to complete tasks. Help build and maintain geodatabases within SWCA standards, as directed. Create Public Facing web applications that meet ADA compliance requirements as well as comply with SWCA data sharing policies.
Experience and qualifications for success
We seek a team member who possesses demonstrated experience in project management, environmental consulting, and geographic information systems. We seek the following specific qualities:
Required Qualifications
Minimum of a bachelor's degree in Geography, Biology, Environmental Science, or related field with an emphasis in GIS (or GIS certificate) At least three (3) years of experience in a GIS position post-education Basic understanding of water resources including common datasets, models, concepts, and types of projects. Preferred or Helpful Qualifications
We do not expect candidates to have all the preferred or helpful qualifications.
A majority of these will be very helpful. Groundwater modeling experience strongly preferred GIS experience with water infrastructure, such as sewers and pipelines, strongly preferred Large-database management experience strongly preferred, including knowledge/experience creating GIS database schemas, domains Experience with supporting field efforts with Esri ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123, and other software GIS project management skills and experience Ability to self-start and work independently, as well as work as part of team and take direction from team leads Experienced with data quality assurance and quality control methods Previous experience with GIS projects/tasks in the environmental consulting industry supporting projects with water resource issues A working understanding of agency internal processes and procedures and positive existing relationships with federal land management and regulatory agencies, such as the BLM, USFS, NPS, BOR, DOE, DOT, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and/or U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Knowledge/experience with workflow automation and tool building using Python, Arcpy, Arcpy.mp, or SQL Knowledge/experience with data transfer, data analysis, data visualization, data mining, and data inventory using software applications (e.g., Windows Explorer, Excel, Access, Esri ArcGIS, SQL)
