Education, Experience and Skill Requirements • High school diploma or equivalent • Experience in genealogy and local history research preferred • Previous library work experience (volunteer work considered) • Basic computer skills required • Experience with automated library cataloging, internet search skills preferred • Strong interpersonal skills, able to work well with library customers and other staff members • Good communication skills, oral and written • Ability to organize work priorities • Ability to accomplish objectives in a team setting • Physical ability to perform responsibilities as listed • Must pass background investigation

Primary Job Duties • Provides excellent customer service to visitors of all ages with their research needs, including the location and use of all types of media, equipment operation, and genealogy research methods • Assists visitors with the use of computers, standard software, electronic databases and equipment • Informs public of the policy and procedures of the unit and the library system • Responsible for in-putting programs and reservations in Calendar of Events on library website and other sites, using required software • Responsible for reporting department statistics, comments, and concerns monthly • Receive and process gift and memorial funds, including requisite acknowledgements • Assist with preparation of new books, and book displays as needed • Responds to telephone, mail, and email question, reference queries • Maintains the appearance and order of the unit: shelving materials, shifting, straightening furniture, staffing the welcome desk • Participates in special projects and events of the unit, including outreach events • Follows opening and closing procedures of the unit and the library system • Participate in meetings and training as appropriate • Works evenings and weekends as scheduled, responding to the librarian in charge • Performs other duties as assigned

After receiving a conditional offer of employment, applicant must pass a drug screen (1/2 cost = $20.00, responsibility of applicant) and may need a physical agility test (1/2 cost = $22.50, responsibility of applicant) before becoming an employee of Montgomery County.
