Department Library Operations

Job Summary

Provides circulation, reference, and general information services to students, faculty, staff, and other library users through the daily operations of the Library Services Desk, online chat service, and Learning Commons, using the library's integrated online system and other resources. Provides reference and technical assistance in the Learning Commons including basic computer and printer troubleshooting and software assistance. Processes print materials received as part of the federal and state depository programs. Assists with other Services Department and Library activities as necessary. This position includes evening and weekend hours. Job Description

Provides reference and technical assistance in the Learning Commons including basic computer and printer troubleshooting and software assistance. Initiates direct contact with library patrons to retrieve overdue equipment and material. Serves as the main point of contact for special borrowers. Hire, train, and supervise student assistants in the department. Assists with other User Services Department and library activities as necessary. This position includes regular evening and weekend hours, opening and closing the building, and extended hours during finals.

Participate in the daily operation of the Library Services Desk and Learning Commons, which includes providing services directly to the public using an integrated online catalog system, including check-ins, checkouts, and promoting good customer relations

Provide customer assistance with public access technology including but not limited to devices (computer, tablet, e-reader, etc.) and peripheral device support including scanners, printers, and microform reader/printer/scanners, use of applications including Microsoft Office, the campus learning management system, the campus printing solution, and other common software apps

Support patron use of library online resources such as ILL, Library Guides, library services request forms, electronic databases etc., public and private internet access, downloading online resources, using digital building map, and new and emerging library technology

Provide support for the library's academic poster printing service.

Assist patrons in person and online with reference and directional questions

Communicate with patrons via email phone, and chat

Help patrons locate items throughout the library and on campus both physically and using university and library maps (digital, online, or paper)

Open and close building as assigned

Work scheduled evening and weekend hours

Participate as part of the User Services Department's responsibilities to monitor building activities, ensure user adherence to Library policies

Report maintenance and safety issues appropriately

Track patron questions and answers to ensure continuity of services across department and to contribute to data collection for annual reports.

Supports the library's partnership with Ben Franklin high school to ensure that students and faculty have access to library resources

Assign library carrels to visiting faculty and graduate students

Work with borrowers to ensure that overdue materials are returned to the library

Handle requests and complaints regarding circulation services with all constituents including faculty, students, staff, alumni, and non-university borrowers.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and library public services or relevant work experience

Demonstrated skills and experience using computers, saving and opening files, cloud storage, printers, Microsoft Office and other technology applications.

Willingness to be flexible and learn new processes and skills in an evolving and dynamic work environment.

Must be willing to switch shifts as necessary to meet operational needs

Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English

Physical ability to move books and book trucks and to lift/move up to 40 lbs. Ability to bend, lift, and twist to reach and work with material and equipment on shelves and on the floor.

Ability to work productively with different groups in an urban academic setting

Excellent customer service skills

Ability to solve problems and exercise good judgment in interpreting rules and following library policies

Demonstrated ability to establish and meet deadlines

Detail oriented

Ability to work with online screen displays/small print

Adaptable, positive outlook and interest in user experiences and needs

Desired Qualifications:

Library work experience in an academic setting

Experience using Springshare CMS including LibGuides, LibStaffer, and LibInsights

Coursework or certificates in using computers, digital literacy, Microsoft Office, or Adobe Creative Cloud software

Experience using the SIRSI Symphony integrated library system

Experience with Canvas LMS

Experience or interest in graphic design

Basic understanding of digital media editing and 3-D printing

Supervisory experience

Interest in Makerspaces containing 3D printers, sewing machines, desktop milling and other makerspace equipment
