JOB SPECIFICATION

LIBRARY/HOMEWORK CENTER ASSISTANT

THE POSITION

Under general supervision, performs relatively complex technical tasks in library/media work; provides library information, assistance and guidance for staff and students; and performs related work as required.

RESPONSIBLE TO: District Library Media Specialist K-12

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this class oversee the operation of the Technology Homework Center (THC); assist students in the THC; implement and supervise school volunteer programs; and develop related enrichment and enhancement programs for students of the District in the THC or the Temecula Public Library Community Room. Incumbents provide library guidance to groups and individual students; assist instructional personnel in utilizing the library; coordinate materials and equipment; instructs students/staff in information literacy especially as it relates to online researching and library skills; collaborates with school sites and instructional personnel in developing enrichment programs to benefit district students at the public library. The duties listed below are typical for positions in the class collectively but no one position will necessarily include all these duties.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive: • Assists in the management of the general operation of the Library Partnership Program. • Instructs or assists students, one-on-one or in small groups, in the THC. • Assists students with online research databases, website evaluation, MLA citations, and copyright law. • Facilitates student use of software applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. • Researches new related technologies database resources and websites to enhance information literacy. • Demonstrates research skills. • Assists students with the use of hardware and software in the THC. • Organizes, implements and maintains records for student tutor program in THC. • Supervises student tutors in the THC. • Maintains accurate files and inventories of textbooks, library books, audiovisual hardware and software. • Organizes and implements student enrichment programs. • Promotes appropriate conduct of students using the THC and library facilities. • Performs a variety of clerical duties to promote and support the Library Partnership programs. • Assists in developing contacts within the school and local community to provide programs for students at the Temecula Public Library. • Maintains the library/Technology Homework Center in a neat, clean and attractive manner. • Participates in district inservice programs.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

Knowledge of: • Internet ethics, plagiarism, MLA citations, reference interviewing, Internet research, website evaluation, Microsoft computer Applications or commensurate programs. • Basic computer hardware and software. • General concepts of child development, child behavior characteristics and age appropriate methods of classroom management. • Library science, organization, terminology, procedures and technological applications. • Basic office routines and procedures. • Correct English usage, spelling, punctuation and penmanship. • Curriculum for grades K-12. • School system infrastructure.

Ability to: • Assist in the instruction of students. • Assist students with online research databases, website evaluation, MLA citations and copyright law. • Facilitate student use of Microsoft applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint or commensurate programs. • Research and learn emerging technologies, database resources and websites. • Perform routine clerical work and prepare clear, concise reports. • Learn specific rules and procedures used in a library setting. • Operate office machines, including computerized library management system, audiovisual equipment, and instructional hardware and software. • Interview students in order to pinpoint their research and reference needs. • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. • Maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. • Demonstrate an understanding, patient, warm and receptive attitude toward students. • Exercise independent judgment. • Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE • Equivalent of two (2) years of college or completion of the twelfth grade and two (2) years of school library clerical experience; or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS Environment: • Library and computer lab setting.

Physical Abilities: • May require periods of walking and standing. • Good arm, hand, finger dexterity in order to operate keyboard, typewriter and other office equipment. • Visual acuity to read words and numbers and speaking and hearing to communicate in person or over the phone. • Lift, carry materials up to 50 pounds; push and pull carts; bend, twist, stoop and reach overhead.
